15mm, 21mm on Desert Hike

Sunday, I hiked a portion of the Ballentine trail. The trailhead is about 40 miles from my house. I managed about 8 miles round trip in 5 hours of strenuous (for me) hiking and photo taking. Lots of up and down on that trail.

Anyway...some of these with the R3A and others with the Fed-2. Don't know which are which. I kept changing back and forth depending on the lens I wanted to use...and the lenses switched bodies too.

These are just the first few, the most colorful of the bunch. The area was too rocky to be overly dramatic with its wildflower display. There are a number of other shots that will look better after conversion to black and white.

15mm Heliar and 21mm color skopar.
Film was kodak 100uc and 400uc. I shot a roll of ektachrome, but that won't be back for awhile.

It's interesting to see what hiking looks like in Arizona. When I consider hiking I tend to think ( in a rather parochial way ) of too many people in anoraks in the overcast English countryside, not someone trekking through a cactus haunted wilderness.

My favourite shot is N0.6- I like how the expansive skyscape adds greatly to the photograph.

In 5 hours, I only saw 6 other people. One couple looked to be in their late 60's. Considering the terrain, I felt humbled by their strength.
I also busted my butt and lost about a dozen square inches of skin on the rocks.
It's a beautiful place though.

I only said to my partner the other day that if we went to visit the 'States this is the time of year to go, and this is where we would go. I get an email newsletter called Digital Desert every month, and at this time of year it is full of reports of the Desert wildflower bloom. I'm so envious, but have really enjoyed seeing your images. Having said that I live in Cornwall in the UK, and the home of the National Magnolia collection is just two miles from where I live, so we really don't do too badly at all. 🙂

We had, what was for us, a chilly day that day. A front was just coming through and I don't believe it got above 60 deg. Normally, our highs are in the 80s this time of year.
We were lucky to get a wildflower bloom. It takes a wet Winter and those only happen every few years.
In Summer I'm out there at 115 degrees or more. Spring is nice.....

very nice photos, steve. i'd be proud if i had taken them.

when i was first shooting with the 15 mm, i would select f4.5, focus on 2 m, use auto shutter speed, then forget about the camera and think about photos. at the time i thought i was being smart. what apertures do you like to use? and do you ever use digital correction for vignetting?
