Ha. I agree about the puppy dog. Years ago the family and new golden retriever puppy went into Manhattan for a shopping trip - while my wife and kids were in a store, I walked around the block a couple of times. It was the only time in my life that beautiful women came up to me. Same thing happened when they went into the second store and I walked the streets with the dog. It was truly amazing (for me at least). So the old saying is true - if you want a (girl) friend in this town, get a dog.

Two unusual choices are on my list.

But first, I already do have all the SLRs, rangefinders, TLRs, etc., that I’ve ever wanted: top rate cameras from the 1950’s through the 1990’s, from subminiature, 35mm, medium format, large format, and instant. They are for fun and for my enjoyment of using them.

For this wishlist game, my second-place choice isn’t too unusual: a 16mm Bolex Reflex, perhaps an H16 Rex 5 with 400’ magazines and a nice set of lenses. I know where and how I could make good use of it, but I wouldn’t like the attention it would attract.

My first-place choice would be a television camera of the early 1960’s - large, heavy, and quite a job to keep it functioning since none of it consists of solid-state electronics, but vacuum tube electronics. I’d have my own little studio, my own show, and somehow record the video - but mostly I want to be the cameraman behind the camera. I’ve had that dream since age 10 or so.

Perhaps a less petulant question would be if you could have any camera, regardless of price, what would it be?

There are a couple ways to interpret that question.

If you're asking "if you were to have only one camera, and get rid of all your others, and price weren't an object what would it be?"
My answer would be that I'd like to keep all my cameras.

If you're suggesting that some eccentric billionaire were to say "I like the cut of your jib*, I'll buy you any camera you'd like!"
My answer would be the M10 Monochrom. I'd contemplate a Fuji GFX (probably the new 100 that's coming out), but probably still go with the M10M, as I have no lenses that would work with the big Fujis. I'd keep all the lenses from my M6TTL and even stuff it in the same, well worn, Domke bag.


*All eccentric billionaires are into sailing metaphors. Them's the rules, I don't make them up!

Well, if I can get my back in shape enough to move about with a camera, I will be happy with a 35mm system I already have, and 6x9 and 9x12 folders. They are fun to me to use, and can produce really nice photos. Assuming of course that I can use them to their full capabilities. sigh.

Sorry, I guess I am a perpetual luddite.

I look at those prices and think wow those prices are high for a digital camera. Hey
I just purchased a old Canon 5D Classic for a lovely price of $250.00 US in Mint condition
and it takes great pictures with the "L" lens I have. So buying the high price stuff is
not for me.
