Dear RFF fans,

Irrationally I'd like to buy a rangefinder set from 1970, my birth year.

BUT
my favourite Canon P is from the fifties
my favourite leica I don't have is an M3
and my favourite Nikosn I don't have are S2 or SP from '55-'65

My one rational criteria is that it be a big rangefinder, I enjoy shooting 50s most. Oh and interchangeable lenses.

The M4 fits the year but the RF is x0.7. Hmmmm... (alas my Scottish genes have provided me with deep pockets and short arms!)

Any recommendations?

Many thanks,

Alex

Well, I'm lucky having been born in 1957- at least as far as Rangefinder Camera Selection is concerned. Bought a Nikon SP when I hit 40.

Aside from the Leica M4, you are looking at an FSU rangefinder or a fixed-lens RF. I would opt for one of those. I bought my Minolta Hi-Matic 9 in 1969, still works.

My other birthday present was a baby boy, so the M4 + 'cron + Noctilux money is kind of already spent.

A Kiev 4A might fit... then i could mount a 1.5 CJZ Sonnar T and focus with a huuuge EBL. But reading on poor quality control and the squintfinder puts me off.

I'm lucky that I was born in 65 - so a late M3 worked out for me 🙂

Get yourself an M4, serial 1250201 - 1254650, and a version 2 or 3 Summicron. Great combo.

Maybe I can say it's really an investment for him...
He's already got his eye on the Canon P and the HC

Congratulations on your Baby Boy!

Cameras made in 2010... Think Ahead...

Nikkor-HC on the way, should be there soon...

Of course my daughter "Nicole", "Nikki", prefers the M3. Name a kid Nikki, put an SP in their hands, they want a Leica.
