2 vague stripes on my photo

Hello,

I just recently acquired a Leica Summitar from eBay and despite the slight haze on the back element of the lens, the photos look pretty stellar, except for one photo that bothers me a little.. I was using Leica M3 with Kodak Tri-X 400 pushed 1 stop.

There seems to be two vague stripes at the top and bottom (crossing the legs of the soft toy) of the photo, which almost look like shadows. I am quite certain that there was no such shadows when I took the photo.

Could it be the shutter curtain? or could it be the film? It was taken at either 1/25s or 1/10s, and I believe it's wide open. There's no such "shadows" on my other wide open shots though..

The shadow lines show distortion. They aren't affected by the objects in the image - so I would say they are artifacts.

It's hard for me to imagine a process that would throw distorted shadows from near the shutter curtain. It seems to me more likely this would come from the front of the lens.

Are you using a rectangular hood?

... if it's just that one frame that's affected I'd forget about it until it happens again ... either way it doesn't look like a camera problem to me

Could be the shutter curtains, had exactly the same on my MDa.

I use neither hood nor filter for that shot..

This M3 just came out from CLA in around Jan this year and I found a total of three frames with light leak, across two test rolls. This roll with the Summitar was the third roll that went into the camera since it came out from CLA. It seems that the issue persists on at least one frame for each roll.

Could the CLA not be done correctly? or perhaps the adjustment was not done properly? I remember the repairman told me that it took him quite some time to fix the erratic shutter speed, especially at the slower end (1/25 and slower). I'm afraid he might have overdone it..

Anyone here with similar experience on your M3?

BTW before the CLA, there's no issue with light leak whatsoever...

It might be your photo wanting to be wet printed, and black bordered 🙂

The only image I have hand right now, but with a lighter subject it is very noticeable

Yeah it looks pretty similar. Did you manage to get your camera fixed? Where in the shutter curtain could the problem be?

... I've just looked and I can't see any part of the shutter curtains that could do that ... very odd

I just had it repaired by Malcolm Taylor, the reason I was given was that the curtain was wrinkled / damaged or something and not seating properly in the slot. Giving rise to the band along the bottom (or showing in the sky in my case).
Also it wasn't noticeable on every frame

Thanks for the info rodt16s! I shall bring the camera back to the repairman for a check if that's the case....
