I didn't travel to Cairns, but I did go into our back yard.

That was the weirdest self portrait I've ever done. Here is a joint effort with my wife taking the photo with her iPhone:

Eclipse 2012, 8.05am Melbourne by Richard GM2, on Flickr
This was just what we saw in Melbourne this morning. If RFF members were in Palm Cove or Cairns their pictures will clearly eclipse these.
I rested the binoculars on the quick release plate of the tripod and leant my monopod against a stiff plant and sellotaped a white envelope to it. The binoculars need to be focussed for the particular set up and with another tripod and a telephoto I could have shown sunspots, so clear is the picture.
I regularly relieved the binoculars to avoid heat build up in the lenses.
I made no plans for this and forgot all about it till I got up at 6:45 am. The eclipse started here around 7:15am. In 2023 I might be retired and will go to Exmouth for the full eclipse experience.
