2013 Leica Oskar Barnack Award Winner

I'm quite taken with the shots. Her sense of proportion appeals to me, especially the way she sites colourful objects in snow.

I can understand that they might not be everyone's cup of tea, though.

The light in those photos is so amazingly diffused it looks like it all has taken place inside a massive softbox.

Really stunning images. Gives a very clear representation of what it must be like to live there.

I can't drag much depth from them though.

I also wonder how she kept her batteries working 🙂

Ok, but didn't knock my socks off.

I found the images pretty, but not arresting, except for the night shot of the radar dish which was quite dramatic. Not, however, as dramatic as many others of the same kind I've seen.

The rest... too many sniper shots with the subject centred, and I really wasn't getting much emotional resonance from the portraits.

Everyone's a critic, I know.

I find the winning images interesting for most part and i am fine with that. I don't know the competition so it is difficult to be objective.
I do have a hunch that Leica are trying to tell potential customers that a digital rangefinders can be used much as a high end DSLR and not necessarily just for what rangefinders in the past were known to be used for.
These winning images could easily have been taken with a high end DSLR and i think that is an intentional message from Leica.

There is no requirement that a contestant use Leica equipment (http://www.leica-oskar-barnack-awar...nia_arbugaeva/1?lb#/en/applying/contest-rules ), so chances are the winner didn't. Last year's winner is a friend of mine, & he didn't use Leica equipment for his winning portfolio.

Here is a video featuring finalists' portfolios. That portraiture series called "American Dolls" is strangely disturbing.

And, oh, whatever else you may think of the photographs, the accompanying music is very good.
