20mm Or 35 mm for zorki 4

The least expensive 35mm of good shooting quality would be the Jupiter 12, which was made for this camera. For 28mm the Orion 15 (?) but it is a rather slow lens. (Tack sharp, but slow) There was a Soviet 20mm lens, but it is rather difficult to find, and it won't be cheap in relation to the modern Cosina/Voigtlander 20mm.

Really the best price/performance in modern lenses would be the Cosina/Voigtlander ones, the 20mm, the two 28mm ones, and the various 35mm ones. One often sees these for sale in good used condition right here on RFDR forum.

The Soviet turret finder is the least expensive and best value viewfinder option for any Soviet camera. It has fields of view for 28, 35, 50, 85, and 135mm lenses. These can be had in good used condition for from $50 to $75. which is way below any other newer finder.

The Zorki 4 has built-in a viewfinder for 50mm only.

I agree with phototone: the Jupiter 12 is a very good value for $ 35mm lens. For any wider lenses, the soviet 28 and 20 mm lenses are expensive. The Voightlander lenses seem to be a better alternative.

I have both the 28 and 20mm FSU lenses. The 28 is much the sharper of the two, however the prices of both have gone to the lunatic area. I think I would look at a CV lens. The 15 is superb but mine will not attach properly to either of my Feds, the focus index goes past the 12 o'clock position so that the fixed hood is out of alignment and causes some vignetting. The 21 and 25 are just fine. You can pick up the 25 Snapshot Skopars at very keen prices. OK so its not R/F coupled but with the Depth of field really does not need to be.

It seems lots of things are going into the "lunatic universe" on Ebay at the moment :bang: Have you seen the price this Zorki 4K went for yesterday and the seller doesn't even know if it works

Sorry for the rant ... back to OT ;)

????????

Hmmm..... I smell bidding war!!!!

No Tony! its money you smell. I suppose its the old adage, that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, in this case too much!!

Ahhh John that would be why I didn't recognise the smell. My money seems to turn into cameras, film, chemicals and paper before I get a chance to inhale ;)

heronop ~ I'm very pleased with my Jupiter 12. Like other Jupiters, for the money, I agree, it's hard to beat. I also plan on getting a 25 or 28 in the not too distant future.

TPPhotog ~ speaking of insanity, here's a BIN Z3M for $160 + $20 shipping. I love my 3M, but $180? Paaalease!

A 28mm lens that is worth looking for is the 28mm Canon Serenar

I wouldn't bother with the 20mm russar now that the 21mm CV is available. The russar's maximum aperture is 5.6, and the one I had for a while wasn't really usable until f/8. I ended up selling it. I suspect that the CV is quite usable wide open. The only thing the russar REALLY had going for it was extreme pocketability since most of the lens sits in the body of the camera rather than protruding. It also LOOKED so cool...

I've been watching Mamiya C330 and Rapid Omega cameras on ebay this summer. The auctions with the highest bids are in the UK. Maybe it's just a UK phenomenon.
