21-28mm lens in chrome suggestion?

If he insists on a Leica brand lens, I don't have any experience...but if he just means M-mount, the CV 25mm Snapshot Skopar is great, and comes in silver. And is inexpensive.
 
Suggest a Canon 28mm LTM in chrome to him. With an adapter, he can use the lens on an M body. Else, a cheap 35mm/3.5 Summaron should do. Neither suggestion exactly fits your needs though.

The CV 25mm in M mount is not available in silver chrome. The, now discontinued, screw mount version was available in chrome, but does not couple to the RF.

I would suggest nailing him down on a FL and buy a Zeiss ZM lens; these are great performers, have a Leica M mount, are not too expensive, and are available in silver chrome.

The only Leica M lens in that FL range still available in silver chrome is the 28mm Summicron (and it's expensive).

All of you are great for advice. Thanks much. What is it about the super angulon for Leica M?? I used SA lenses for my large format work and they were good.
 
The chrome 28 elmarit is an especially well crafted lens. After seeing and handling it, it has the extra dimension of tactile reward handling it that made me decide to get it over the extremely good new 28/3.5. So I recently purchased a mint used one now being coded in NJ, can't wait! best...Peter

You'll have to help me out. If you are referring to the 28mm Elmarit, almost all of which were made in Canada in the 1970s, it may have been produced in silver chrome in very limited numbers. The prior version (available in chrome, but in limited numbers) had a rear element that protruded deep into the body (this would render useless the M8's meter and auto exposure mode). There are no six-bit codes designated for either of these lenses.

And, AFAIK, there has never been (old, new, or whatever) a Leica 28mm f/3.5 - so regarding this I have no idea what you're talking about.

To the OP:

As already stated, the 28mm Summicron is currently available in silver chrome (limited production and very expensive) and the current 28mm Elmarit may be had in silver chrome only if purchased with the limited edition M8.2 Safari.

The 21mm and 24mm f/2.8 Elmarits were available in silver chrome, but the chrome versions are now discontinued - and currently extremely hard to find (they're usually priced at a premium compared to black).

The 21mm f/3.4 Super Angulon (produced from 1963 through about 1980) was available in chrome - but this lens also had the deep protruding rear element.

Your best choices of M lenses produced in silver chrome - at least within your FL parameters - are produced/branded by Ziess.
 
Nikon and Leitz both made 28mm lenses in chrome LTM, requiring M adapters. The f/3.5 Nikkor was a very decent lens. I used to borrow my friend's from time to time. The Leitz products were f/6.3 and f/5.6. I had an f/5.6 for awhile but it was too slow, and hardy the crispest lens I ever used.
 
I'd look at the CV 28/3.5 in chrome. You can still get it in chrome new. It's supposed to be a great lens - I have one on the way. It's tiny.
