21mm Super Angulon

I got this lens not too long ago so I haven't experimented too much, but I was wondering if anyone has an opinion as to what could be causing the black shape in the sky in this shot. It appeared in the same place in many shots. I used a hood and also had a uva filter on for some shots (leica telyt).

If you're shooting on a digital body (M8, M9, R-D1), that's probably a speck of dirt on your digital sensor. This sort of thing only shows against bright backgrounds (like the sky) and when the lens is stopped down to about f/8 or smaller.

If you're shooting film, check to see if there's any crud in the rear element group of the lens.

anyone here have a spare front cap for the SA?🙄

I've discovered that the grey hammertone lens cap from an old Leitz slide projector has the same 52.5mm internal diameter as the original black plastic cap for the 21/3.4 SA, and is much cheaper if you can find one. The projector cap is much shallower than the SA cap, so it won't stay on if you have a 48mm filter mounted on the lens; but it works just fine to protect the front element while not in use.

Anyone aware of a smaller option for a hood on the SA? Probably would have to be some sort of low profile ring... and an accompanying cap would be nice.

Hi Ari, a few factors bUt not a light leak....
zapped Film arista premium / had a bunch of rolls with a strange Band through them
pushed film w/ not gentle agitation
ALL added to this Strange Charm & Atmosphere
though a Purist in the Darkroom may be Horrified...😱

the 21 never lets You Down, even if other things Fail ...🙂

Gorgeous image Helen. Love what you see with your eye. I noticed the fall-off too but I don't think it distracts from the image at all.

Ah, OK -- that explains it. I know the SA itself has some fall-off in the corners at wider apertures ("some"="tons" on the R-D1 🙂 ), but it looked odd to see it on only one side!

Really nice picture though, as usual. You really know how to find the right images for this lens!

This is great Simon, would you say that this lens is easy to use like this? On the move? I mean just being aware of exposure and a rough focus?

Thanks Matt! Its not something that I do lots of but yes I would say that this lens is very easy to shoot on the move. The depth of field is pretty massive so even in poor light focus is relatively easy to achieve. If you can keep the aperture at f11 then I think you have half a metre to infinity in focus!

Yes, there are a number of photos from the 1960s in Jim Marshall's book "Not Fade Away" that he notes were done with a 21mm lens on an M4.

Any chance this lens would mount on a Bessa R2, Minolta CLE, or Hexar RF? It doesn't look promising, looking at how deep the rear element goes.

CLE no problem, I used to use that comb o all the time - you lose TTL metering though.

R2, I don't know.
