21mm Super Angulon

I'm growing weak... Very weak. Just got myself a CV 21 to try out the FOV. If I can feel comfortable with the 21mm, then who knows!

How does the 21 3.4 Super Angulon perform on the Monochrom? Anyone have this combo?
It is pretty obvious that the lens was designed for film only but does it work on a FF Rangefinder?

Some people are happy with it on a monochrom - I haven't had much luck. Smeared corners and loads of vignetting - I couldn't figure out the right mojo to apply in lightroom/photoshop.

I've read that the 4 is not as good as the 3.4 but these look pretty good to me.

Never believe what you read. I can certainly testify to the fact that the 4/21 SA is one of the most under-rated lenses out there - some of my best shots have been with this lens. It has a certain quality and rendering to it. Its also much smaller and compact than the 3.4/21 - but with all that brass to it, it weighs a little for its size. The only bad thing about it is that you can't use the internal camera meter with it; you have to use a handheld meter.

I don't believe everything I read but I do respect certain members opinions who have had extensive experience with many lenses, hence the pleasant surprise. The 4/21 could be a good choice for my iiic as I believe they were available in LTM as well as M mount

The current 21mm from Leica, the Super Elmar, is that identical to the 3.4 Super Angulon or has it been improved for digital sensors?
I am only guessing here but i assume that Leica can't use the Super Angulon name that is a Schneider trade name and therefore call it a Super Elmar instead.

Well, seeing as how I had one I thought it might be a cheaper SA for my M...

It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, not having a rangefinder is no problem with 21mm but even the CV viewfinder (not in pic) gets blocked by the lens and this is without the hood.

I'll put it back on the Sony where it spends most of its time.

I'm not too sure about comparisons between SA R and M. The first R one was 3.4 and required mirror lock up, the second, this one was F4 and retrofocus.

I'd guess that the 3.4 is optically similar in both mounts and the 4.0 are quite different in design?

Excellent. I don't a significant increase in vignetting or lower contrast when compared with the 3.4.

Vignetting for the 21/3.4 is more pronounced when shot wide open and it also depends on the contrast of the scene.
