Hello,
I was hoping someone with the 28/2.8 v4 might be able to post a picture that shows the blockage looking THROUGH a .72 viewfinder, with and without hood.

I'm looking to acquire a 28mm 2.8 and it seems V3, V4 and ASPH are all great optically but based on what I've read the V3 size would bother me, which leaves V4 and ASPH. I'd like to save a few hundred bucks and get the V4 but I'm not sure whether I'd find the V4 blockage distracting. I know it's smaller than V3 but can't really tell by how much searching online.

Would appreciate pictures and comments also more than welcome!

p.s. I've been lurking for 3 years but this is my first post...hello RFF!

I don't have a photo, but I changed from the V3 to the ASPH on account of finder blockage and I'm very happy with the finder view now. My ASPH hood has the little peep hole window that lets me see enough down in the lower right corner. And it is shorter than the V3 to begin with, which also helps.

You can make a decent short hood by using an empty filter ring from the camera store bargain box. That's another way to improve the view!

When I owned the v4 I don't remember ever being bothered by the blockage. The hood however is huge, and I never took it out of the box. This is a great lens, that luckily doesn't flare much. I did find it a bit heavy though.
The asph has great ergonomics even with the hood on.

Hey ive had all three. All these excellent. On side by side tests, v4 is the best in terms of frame to frame sharpness. V3 has the more appealing rendering to my tastes. Asph is tiny and nearly as good as the v4.

V3 blocks about 30% on Lower right corner of .72 without hood. V4 about 10% and is certainly very usable without the massive hood. Both v3 and v4 in fact. If you don't want any blockage stick to the asph with a filter.

Best

Fred

It sounds like I'll be happy with the V4.
I may keep my current CV 28/3.5 as well...I have the feeling I'll miss it when (if) it's gone.
Thanks all.
