28m point and shoot

Following my previous thread, I realised that I now want (and prefer maybe), a 28mm point and shoot camera.

I was actually going to get the Fuji Mju II but not sure if I want 35, as I already have 35 on my Leica...

How much money do you want to spend? 28mm point and shoots come in a wide variety of sizes and capabilities. The list above is a good starting point. I own the GR1v and the Fuji Tiara. Both are great cameras. The GR1v is a bit more functional, but the lenses on both cameras are of equal performance (in my opinion.)

Buy the GR1v if you can. It's a keeper.

There's the Nikon 28Ti...Nikon AF600/Nikon Lite Touch...Fuji Klasse W...Ricoh GR1 series...Fuji Tiara...Olympus XA4...if you can swing it, the Minolta TC1.

Personally, 28mm is too wide for me with a p&s, I would get one with a 35mm lens like the Olympus Stylus Epic (aka mjuII) you mentioned. But I no longer have a Leica with a 35, so I may feel differently if I did..

I think I didn't want to spend alot, only because I wanted to "throw" the camera into my bag/pocket and just shoot.

GR1 is a pretty amazing camera. Check out Daido Moriyama's work with one. Very easy to set the aperture and dial in exposure compensation. That and the SNAP mode which focuses at about 6 feet or so makes it an awesome street camera for very quick shooting.

Another option is the Olympus XA4.

Both great to use and abuse.

I believe he uses both, the 28 more often. If you look at his photos the majority of them are from this focal length.

But in any case, the GR1 would be my first choice of a 28mm point and shoot.

Hi Sara,

There are not lots of 28mm point-and-shoot cameras with low prices, as for "throwing in a bag all the time", which is a very good idea indeed!... Although you said you have 35 in your Leica, don't discard the idea of a 35 on a point-and-shoot, or on a compact with AE: basically a P-N-S if prefocused and stopped-down... I say this because if you accept the 35mm focal length into your equation, your game of looking for a nice everyday/anywhere camera becomes a much more pleasant and interesting one: lots of options instead of very few ones... I agree: those two are the options I considered some time ago...

Maybe the XA4 can take more bag abuse? In the end, for 28 I kept my real RFs with the flat 28 3.5 because they're a truly pocketable set with full manual and ISO control, AE and fast shutter, and for more abuse situations and tiny size I went for an XA (35mm) for more control than the XA4 and more abuse than I thought a GR1v could resist in the long run. I use the XA at ISO800 and f/8-f/11 only: I'll use an XA for as long as I can walk.

Among the many 28mm P&S I've used, I rate the GR1v as the high point of combination of features, size, ergonomics, optical quality and efficiency in actual use.

Have a look at the Canon Serenar LTM lenses for you Leica. Both in 28 and 35, when stopped down and prefocused your Leica can be your P&S!

If low price is your #1 concern, I cast my vote for the Nikon Lite Touch AF (AF 600). It is a tiny little thing with a very good lens and is also very well built, and will cost you a fraction of what any of the others mentioned in this thread will.

If you go slightly longer, the Pentax Espio Mini and Ricoh R1 are good choices - much cheaper, on par with the Nikon AF600. The Espio is 32mm/3.5 and Ricoh 30mm/3.5, switchable to panorama and 24mm.

Klasse W is a nice camera, or Fujifilm Natura Classica is a zoom camera, but has 28mm at the wide end I think.

Lomo LC-A+ is a 32mm lens I think, quite close.

Sara, seriously consider the Olympus XA (not XA1 or XA2) which has a 35mm lens and a rangefinder, but is super tiny.
