I have the opportunity to buy a very good Nikon S3. When mounting a 28mm, does the whole finder approximately correspond to that, since there are no specific 28mm frame lines?

The whole finder is closer to a 35mm lens FOV, so close that the outer lines were left off the Nikon S4.
Either use an external finder, or opt for a Nikon SP with the secondary finder.

I use an external 28mm finder on my S2 and S3 when using a 28mm lens.
The S3 has a life size view with 35mm frames, so there isn’t any extra room to cover a 28mm.

Well, I had in mind to put a Nikon diopter in front of the finder - do you think it would work on the sp? Put a diopter in front of each finder?
An eyepiece correction diopter won’t widen the view unfortunately

Sorry I meant for my eyesight, so since there are two finders on the sp,maybe I can use two diopters? Would you know whether a Nikon diopter can be more or less adapted to the S3?
You would have to mount the diopter on the eyepiece, and the SP would need something custom to be made.
The S3 is better for this. You still need an external finder for 28mm lenses, would probably be easier to mount a correction lens to an external finder.

Voigtlander!! I have a Leica LTM with Leitz lenses - but for me the best lenses start and end with the 'V'. They cannot be surpassed.

There was a recent thread here on RFF concerning 3D printed diopter lens holders for Nikon SP and S2. I had one printed for my SP and then cut an inexpensive reading glass lens to fit. Both the 28/35 finder and the 50-135 finder/RF are now sharp and clear and the 50 mm frame lines are completely visible for me. If you want a 28 on a Nikon RF this is certainly the most convenient way to go. I haven't handled an S3 so I don't know if the SP holder would work to place the correction lens in the right place, although the bodies are similar in other respects.

The correction lens would be needed for focusing only, I see well enough to compose. But I wonder how small the image is on the secondary finder on the sp.

The 28/35 finder is quite useable. It isn't as good as a separate Leica or Zeiss equivalent, but I have found it to work well. And with the SP you also get finders for the 85 mm, 105 mm and 135 mm lenses built in as well, so if you have any interest in those lenses you won't need to resort to an external finder.

I’d get the Ricoh GV-1 finder (comes with 21mm and 28mm framelines) and put it on the hot shoe. It costs roughly $130 on eBay. I use it for wide lenses on my Bessa R3A.
