3.5cm Elmar with 5 digit S/N

I just picked up an uncoated 3.5cm Elmar that has a 55XXX serial number. I was always under the assumption the Leica serial numbers started at 100,000, does any one have any details?

55xxx seems odd. But I have already seen 9xxxx Elmars, LTM of course!

Leica serial numbers started at 31 for the Leica I. Early lenses are un-numbered.

I have never heard the story about starting at 100,000

31? You mean a regular number on the usual place of the lens?
I have never seen that...

No, 31 engraved on the top of a camera. The lowest I have seen was in the 120s

As to the lowest engraved number on a lens I have certainly seen them below 100,000 but don't know how low they go.
