35/2.0 Filter help

I wonder if anyone has a filter solution for the 35/2.0 Canon.

I know it takes 40mm filters which are pretty uncommon and BW doesn't seem to offer anything in that size. I'm kind of reluctant to buy the Fotasy brand filter (40mm for X10) as I would prefer a known quality product. I have a 40mm Canon yellow filter but its pretty marked up from storage and cleaning.

Do you think I could use a E39 filter and some teflon tape?

Although I've managed to acquire a few 40mm filters for my Canon lenses, my effective solution is to use a 40-43mm step up ring, and 43mm filters which are widely available. Works like a charm! I believe I got the step up ring from Heavystar ...

I remember I used filters with this lens but never bought a cheap 40mm solution. I think I bought a few 40.5mm and sanded down the threads a bit. Worked just fine. I know I had to use filters because I was shooting an M8 at the time and had to produce work in color, so those shiny magenta filters were the only thing that kept me from spending too many extra hours in post before turning assignments in.

I've been using a Marumi brand 40mm UV filter via Amazon. Quality seems just fine. I also have a 40-40.5mm (this vignettes a bit) and 40-49mm step ring which works fine but looks ungainly. I've a few uncoated Canon filters but these need a hood to shield from flare.

For a uv filter, I use a JYC brand from eBay.
I'm happy with the quality and they are super cheap.

The Marumi brand your mentioned are good quality. They have a yellow filter available for 40$ on Amazon. That sounds expensive, but used Canon 40mm filters often sell for 40$

I do pretty much the same. With this twist - with older lenses especially, I prefer to use a lens hood too.

My solution has been to buy inexpensive aftermarket hoods on eBay with a 43mm diameter and step up rings which depend on the diameter of the relevant lens (e.g. 39mm-43mm; 40mm-43mm; 40.5mm - 43mm; 41mm - 43mm). This means I can use one hood with multiple lenses if that is what I want to do and even if I buy multiple hoods it is just easier to find the correct hood for any lens as they are all the same diameter. Of course it also means I can buy 43mm filters and use them with said lenses buy putting them on the step up ring and then putting the hood on the filter rings. This is even easier when you have multiple lenses as in general its a pain to buy multiple filters which are except for the diameter otherwise identical, for multiple lenses.

When possible I have, however, bought original Canon filters from time to time. They are not commonly available today and relatively expensive when you do find them but I am lucky in that a decade or more back they were now and then available in second hand drawers in some camera stores. So I grabbed as many as I could. Same with Leica 39mm filters. BTW if you can find the set of Canon filters shown below they are a great way to go for black and white shooting as they came in yellow, orange, red etc. A disadvantage of the Canon filters though is that most of them do not have front screw threads which means that when used on a lens you cannot then use a hood which screws into the filter. (Most original Canon hoods were clamp fit).

I used the marumi filter on my 35mm f1.8 canon and was happy with it
to have a protecter on the glass and it is multi coated

I've today ordered a Camdiox CPRO 40mm UV filter (for my 50/1.8). It's an ultra thin multi coated nano glass .. whatever that is .. touted for the Fuji X10/X20 digital camera series (which to our great fortune use 40mm size so modern manufacturers are again producing the size we need.

I like to keep a native-sized filter on my lenses for protection, and otherwise use stepup rings to use the various colored filters in 49mm and 55mm size I've gathered over decades.

I've bought a fair few filters from these folks over the years and been very happy with the prices, condition, and their service.

Alternately, I have used a 40 to 40.5 step ring--that worked well for me and let me use the filters and hoods I'd gathered for my FSU lenses on my Canon 50 f/1.8 lens.

FWIW, I bought a Fotasy brand 40mm filter for my Canon lenses. Does not work. Its not quite correct size. It appears to be an adequate filter (multi-coated well enough, etc) but worthless to me. I don't remember if its a little too large or small, but I did notice that the filter is threaded to receive more accessories/filters on top of it. That filter diameter was not 40mm either. I still have that thing somewhere in the closet.

I have a variety of 40mm filters though. Mostly Canon vintage. So I'm set.
