Snagged a Goggled Summaron.. Finally!

The one lens ive been wanting almost as long as ive been shooting Leica, just could never find one at the right price in good enough condition to justify the purchase.

Lucky for me, the lens I bought has both original front and rear caps, along with a 12571J Hood (aka early IROOA)

My question is simple, what hood can I reverse on the Summaron (2.8)?

A google search leads me to believe my 12571 is not reversible on the Summaron (maybe on my Collapsible Summicron)

Im not opposed to hacking up a hood to accomodate the focus tab... But ide probably buy a less valuable IUFOO to do it. Looking at sales the 12571J is up there with the IROOA and ITDOO hoods around 100-150$ USD and the IUFOO is more around 50-75$ USD

Moving on, is the 12585 hood reversible? What about its cheaper/lighter plastic brother the 12538? (of course im talking on my 2.8 Summaron)

Any push in the right direction is appreciated, have a home modified hood? Send me some pictures of what you did!

Devon,

The 12585 won't reverse either, but I like using a chrome version 3 50 Elmar hood when not using filters. This is rather elegant because you can use that beautiful push on metal vintage correct metal cap and offers the lowest profile with the least VF'er blockage. The only thing bad is that you cannot use this hood with filters because vignetting will happen.

I use the 12585 with filters and use an inexpensive "Hood Hat" as a lens cap that costs under $10.00.

Cal,

I was looking into the Elmar V3 hood for my Summicron and it is super simple!

I do really like the idea of a snap on/ reversible hood I can use on all 3 of my E39 lenses (35 Summaron, 50 Summicron, 90 Elmar-M).. Might have to hack something up

Devon,

I use the V-3 50 Elmar hood on a Summaron, 50 Rigid and 90 Macro Elmar. All these lenses are chrome.

The V3 Elmar hood is expensive, cheapest I could find was a black finish at 80$. Leica code 12550.

The ITOOY is cheaper, but it wouldnt do anything my 12571 wouldn't.

Hmm.. Might have to just find a super cheap IROOA,IUFOO, ITDOO,12585, 12538 hood to hack out a spot for the focus tab.

Devon,

I bought my chrome version for around $50.00. Funny thing is that it looks right on a 50 Rigid and 35 Summaron like it was engineered for those lenses. Really minimal, but cannot be used with filters.

On my 90 Macro Elmar it keeps the lens small and can be used with filters.

I find the Elmar not expensive because it serves three lenses. BTW the inexpensive screw in hoods that are aftermarket that resemble the 12585 vignette with filters on the 50 Cron and 35 Summaron.

Not a huge fan of screw on hoods, especially those chinese vented things.

Ill have to keep an eye out for a cheap 12550 to try, in the meantime ive found a few articles online about the reversible issue. Seems there is not a hood that will on the Summaron. Im not even sure if it will on my collapsible Summicron either.

Im thinking, sell my 12571J, buy a cheaper IUFOO and cut it down, then make the appropriate cutout to accommodate the tabs on both my Summaron and Summicron.

Hmm... I do like making things... And cutting good things up 🙂

A 12526/12524 would be nicer... But definitely no reversing those square hoods eithout the forward set of pins.

So I did the unthinkable...

I cut into the 12571J hood and now it reverses fine!

Fortunately there was a good size ding right where I wanted to cut, a little black paint on a toothpick now im grooving. Shouldnt affect resale should it? 😉
