Ive seen some comments recently about there being two different versions of the current 35 cron asph, since I cant find any info, I ask the great leica guru's in the sky to bestow the information down on us ignorant

The Leica LHSA Hammertone Summicron 35 f/2.0 ASPH is a limited production lens . The optical formulae are identical, however the LHSA model has a lens body modeled after the 1960's design.

I know there are two versions of the Summilux. The first is the ASPHERICAL version and legend has it this item had hand ground aspherical elements that proved too costly for series production (I once heard that the only person who could grind the elements died and no one else knew how to do it properly... this sounds like a Leica myth to me, but maybe someone knows for sure). The much more common ASPH version has molded aspherics and is the current model. As to imaging differences between the two, the ASPHERICAL version is quite rare so only a select few would know for sure.

There was a 35 summicron aspherical produced before the summicron 35 asph. The lenses are virtually identical. I'm parroting Erwin Puts here.

Jaap,

I think you (and Herr Puts) are referring to the 35 Summilux Aspherical and Summilux 35 Asph.

You are right.I quoted from fallible memory and I looked it up tonight; I was to lazy to get out of bed and correct it; thanks!
Btw, it is Meneer Puts, not Herr Puts 😛

Cheers!
