I had to rub my eyes and look twice.

Tony Rose just sold a pre-asph 35 Summicron (The "bokeh-king!" ) for a cool $1,557. (That was the asking price, at least. Let's hope the buyer haggled. A lot.)

Un-freakin'-believable.

If you read Stephen Gandy's site on buying vintage (not so objective picks and pans) you'll see that the used Leica market changes in respect to what is pricey now may not have been pricey a few years ago (and vice versa). When word gets out that something is "the bokeh king" and then oh no, it's not made anymore... prices will go up. And word gets around a lot quicker nowadays with the internet and forums... Ebay has contributed to this too.

I bought mine new in 1993... my Leica M starter kit. A brand new black M6 (before it was called "classic") and the 35 summicron. I think the lens was $1295 new back then. Still have them both (but no plans to sell)!

Wasn't it a chrome example, mint in the original box?

I think the voigtlander 35's are better. But that's my opinion. I have a 35 1.2. And am considering a 35 1.7 as they have different characteristics.

Check out KEH. I was just looking on there and I saw a bunch of 35mm Summicrons for under a grand. Not sure what version. I picked up mine a few months ago which I think is a 4th version Canadian for $700 on eBay.

It would be my guess that wides are in greater demand now because of the crop factor with the new M8's. This is now going to be the new 50mm equivelant, of course this is my guess only.

But let's not fool ourselves, Leica gear has always been expensive and we all continue to "lust" over it. We just try and cure our "lust" with the older crons, summarits and summarons by trying to convince ourselves that these lenses have "character or that "sparkle". If this was the case than Leica wouldn't have worked so hard to develop the newer made APO/ASPH models. I for one try not to fall into this "trap" and am happy to use either CV lenses or the ZM's made by Cosina. I will admit that if the funds were available I'd line up to buy a 35 Lux ASPH a 50Lux ASPH and probably a 75 APO ASPH and I'm sure that greater than 90% of us would do the same thing.

I know that I need to work harder at curing the "Leica Bug" because I for one know that I can't begin to do justice to these lenses with my weekend shooting.

Save your money...... stock up on film 😀

no, not yet.
everytime i save a few bucks i spend them on other gear, lately oly om gear.

of course, i could sell the 50/2 and maybe even the 90/2.8 which rarely gets used...

sorry, time to drive myself crazy again...

joe

Come on Joe just look at it...... 😉

Remember a year or so ago, when someone on RFF was advocating that we replace the obscure term "bokeh" with the more self-evident acronym SOFA, for Soft Out of Focus Areas? And someone else pointed out that a lens with especially good SOFA might be termed the "SOFA King"... from which it followed logically that such a lens would likely fetch high prices, making it "SOFA King expensive"...

And now that long-ago thread comes true. RFF foretells the future!
