35 Summicron prices are now officially "insane"

[sarcasm] PMU, you were lucky to get rid of it at all. Those 3rd version Summicron 35's were made in Canada, and everyone knows the Canadian lenses are pretty much worthless. [/sarcasm]

😀 😱 😀 😱 😀

The 4th version was made in Canada until around '88 IIRC when they opened the current factory in Solms. The one I had happened to be Canadian, as is my 3rd version (the one I kept), and my 90 Summicron. All the Mandler-designed lenses were at least initially made in Canada because that's where he was located. Considering how much everyone respected Mandler it never made any sense that lenses made under his control would get a lower respect than the same designs made beyond his control in Solms.

I've been trying to get my hands on a canon 50mm 1.2 for two months. And the prices are going up near $500. My guess is that since there's a digital Leica now, the used market is going to inflate.

The Summicron prices have gone thru the proverbial roof. I wanted one as a ride-along w/ my 50mm Summilux but found them all over the top expensive. Forget the 8-element!

I'm now considering a V3.

I wonder how is the summicron compared to my CV 35mm Pancake II? Is my CV 35mm PII worth the $100 to get it fixed by Stephen Gandy?

I love Stephen, but I do think his repair prices are on the high side.

What happened to the lens? Get quotes to repair it elsewhere just to check who else works on them.

You should probably just save your money for the time being.... it appears through your gallery that you shoot primarily in digital may be another SD Card 😀

Stephen originally offered to repair the lens under warranty a month ago. I got lazy with thanksgiving and was just about to send it out now but it is no longer under warranty..

My problem with the lens is that the entire center barrel, the one that encompasses all the glass elements, has become loose, with 1/16" play in every direction.. I emailed DAG for a repair quote as well. We'll see if it's cheaper. Maybe I can do this repair myself too? Would I need any special tools for general lens repair?

Good call, I do need more memory cards for my new 5D...

A lens spanner usually does the trick. On many lenses, there's a large lock nut that holds the lens group to the focus mount. The 35 Summicron I used to own kept loosening up until I used a dab of loctite on the lock nut threads. I was going to tighten up my 40 Nokton, but my spanner tips were too big. Since the focus was stiff, too, and the lens needed to be relubed, I just sent it into DAG.

what is a lens spanner?

edit:
okay I googled lens spanner.. but now the question is, what is the point of that tool? How do I use it?

It looks a pretty scary tool to me. I think it's for tightening those slotted radial lockrings that lenses have.
BTW I've had both the CV PII and the 'cron IV. I like the 'cron IV better but as I don't use a 35 much these days I'm thinking of cashing in on the "insane" prices and getting another PII.

Mark, you like the PII that much eh? Can you point me to some of your PII shots?

With regards to the lock rings, is that the unpainted metal ring at the base of the lens? ( I don't have my lens at hand)

It's more like I need the money 🙂 . This link finds all my shots on Flickr with Skopars. A few are with the 25 or 50, but mostly it's the 35 PII. I used the PII as my main lens for most of last year. 35 is now an occasional FL for me. I can't describe the lock ring as I sold the lens a few months ago.

Update: this linked to a lot of photos not taken with the Skopar, I must tidy up my tags. I'll post anew link when it works properly.

Here's one from the Micro Tools site: http://www.micro-tools.com/store/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=T-132-34567

The lock ring that holds on the lens group is a threaded ring about 1 1/2 - 2" in diameter with slots on either side. You adjust the lens spanner to fit, attach the appropriate blades and you're all set. Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey! 😀

I must chime in, I must confess: I just paid a whole lotta money for a near-new 4th version 35 Summicron with caps, shade, card, box. My heart took over my head because I love leica 35 Summicron lenses and I just had to see what this lens is all about, Bokeh or not. It is a German (Solms) lens, and should arrive soon (then the testing will begin). So I hope I did not help to keep the prices high and apologies if I did.
