35mm F2.8 Summaron for M2!

Mines an M2 mount, and goes down to .7M (2'4")

Been outside, shooting in the rain, 1/40 at F2.8 with Eastman XX. It "feels" and handles like my old V1 35 Summicron. I'm very pleased.

1) yes.
2) No if I understand right. Some early ones are built on top of the LTM version (SIMOO/11006).

that's the way i understand it. i have an LTM one and it goes to 1m.

Hi guys. I just bought my first ever Leica, an M2. And now I am looking for a lens. I'm thinking this might be an apt one as the price seems quite affordable. But looking at ebay listings has got me confused. There seems to be a strange looking type or version of this lens. The strange version has something attached to it. Can that, whatever that is, be removed?

That's a goggle to be used with the M3, which doesn't have a 35mm frameline built-in. I think it can be remove but I'm not sure of that and of focusing accuracy then

There are 4 types of this lens, all with identical optics, just as with the v1 Summicron:

1. LTM, minimum focus 1m (somewhat uncommon, though not as rare as a v1 Summicron in LTM).

2. M-mount with eyes (non-removable) for the M3, min focus 0.65m.

3. M-mount for M2/4, min focus 0.7m.

4. M-mount for M2/4 convertible to LTM, min focus 0.7m. These have the red dot on the rim of the M bayonet mounting flange, rather than on the barrel next to the DoF scale. The M flange is removed by loosening a small set screw and then unscrewing the flange like an LTM-M adapter.

So if you see an LTM version that focuses down to 0.7m, it's a convertible M version missing the bayonet mounting flange.

EDIT: Needless to say, finding a loose original M-mount flange for one of these isn't easy -- but a standard LTM-M converter will work too. And, if you find a non-goggled M version that focuses down to 0.65m, someone has surgically removed the M3 eyes, and you'd better make sure they adjusted or replaced the focusing mechanism as well before you buy it for your M2/4/etc.

I happen to own a Summaron 35mm f/2.8 with removable M-flange AND red dot next to the DOF-scale. Serial nr. 1627820, very early, focusing to 0,7m.
