35mm lens test

Huck,
I'm curious. I've read alot about the Canonet QIII and never saw anything about it's "design" parameters. Do you know someone on the Canon design team? LOL.
Seriously, I'm really curious how it was designed differently than other RF's of that era.

Okay, Canonman, you got me. I don't know anyone on the design team. However, I bought one back in 1977 & I wstill have it. I have some recollection of the marketing pitch. They were the point & shoots of the day & were considered to be an excellent buy because of their build quality & "professional features."

Although I don't know anyone from the design team, I can read between the lines. This is a shutter priority camera. Opt for a faster shutter speed if your subject is moving, slower if you need more light. Let the camera take care of the aperture. That's not a design whose primary function is to shoot wide apertures unless you have to. Of course you had that option if your skills lens themselves to it back in those days.

In a similar way, I don't need to talk to the design team to know that the Contax G was designed with autofocus as the first option. Yes, manual focus is available, but that's not what it was designed to optimize. While I can deduce that, it also happens to be what Contax says in their literature.

I can't find a direct reference in the Canon literature, but I think I can deduce their intent as well. Of course, I may just be full of beans . . . & often am. 😀 😉

I know what you mean about the SP - it seems blasphemous to suggest trashing it!

I am finding the Konica S2/Himatic 7S idea increasingly attractive. Neither is perhaps as compact or as sought after as the Oly or G111, hence low prices.

I hear the siren call of the 'bay ...... perhaps after Christmas!

Taffer,
I was so impressed with the shots taken by the Konica S2 that I bought a Konica "T" SLR with a 57mm lens on Ebay just to see if other Konica glass was that good. The whole set up cost about as much as the RF and is indeed pretty decent. Now I'm waiting for Konica's legendary 40mm pancake lens to arrive.
😀

I have owned and used most of the 50-70's compact rangefinders including Olympus 35S, 35RC, 35RD, 35SP/SPn and Konica auto S/S2/S3 and Yashica. Canon et al. I trashed all of them except 35SP. I painted two RFs one is 35Sp the other is Konica auto S2 for resolution wise Sp S2 in the same level, but SP has spot meter and better construction than S2, for example S2 top and button plate made of aluminum, Sp made of copper. Canonnet build quality is not the best, the lens barrel and focus helical have some play is very common for IIIG compare to other maker. When read internet camera review use your commmon sense.
