35mm options on a tight budget

I'm after a 35mm focal lenght lens, not too bothered about the max f stop, but my budget is ever so tight at the moment, what are the options for a ltm 35mm lens for my Canon P. I'm a bit wary of mounting the Jupiter 12. Any recommendations would be greatfully recieved

I've seen the f3.5 summaron go for ~150€, not the best and fastest glass in the world, but very well built and cool tones in combination with medium to high contrast film/developer.

and you, of course, might want to consider the VC LTM 35s as well, they can be had for not much money as well.

J-12 is worth looking at. (trying)

I heard mixed reviews, too, but mine works well on my P.

CV 35/2.5 in LTM is in the vicinity of $200 and as mentioned before faster film, e.g for B&W, use Diafine as developer and expose HP5+ @ EI 800 or Tri-X @ EI1250.

The Canon 35/2.8 is a fine lens, the chrome version is small and uses 34mm filters. It can be found for $150~$200 with patience.

Hey lxmike,

I think the J-12's rear element would be the collateral in any case that it would hit the metal curtains.

I had the chance to play with my friends Canon P and used J-12 with it. It's just a hairline between the lens rear element and light buffer. Some say that other j-12s will really hit the light buffer.

I too have heard a later J12 will work on the P, seen many hear were using this combo. As others have said, the Canon 35/2.8 is very good, I really like mine, and CV 35/2.5 Classic are also excellent and relatively inexpensive.

I used to use a Jupiter 12 on a Canon 7. It worked just fine - biggest headache was watching out for the RF cam when mounting the lens 🙂 From what I've actually seen and used, the black ones will work just fine & most of the newer chrome ones will work. The only ones that don't work are the older chrome ones (about 1959 & older).

Now I just need to find even a J-12 that I can afford for my IIIf :bang:

Aside from the J-12, I can recommend the CV 35/2.5 & Canon 35/1.8 lenses - both high quality & reasonably priced lenses.

for B&W - get the Canon 35/2.8 LTM - a stunningly good lens for the price ($200).. I ended up selling mine only because I had and prefer the 35'cron v3 and couldn't justify two 35mm lenses
