Are there any alternatives to the 35mm pre asph summilux lens hood?

From what I understand, Leica's Series VII lens hood is the 12504 which fits the older pre asph lenses.

Might there be alternatives or generic models which do the same? Are there alternatives to using filters without the costly Leica lens hood? Is the Series VII lens hood the only way to mount a filter?

Welcome, hitx1.

I do not know the details of this particular lens, but one seller who may well have what you need is Heavystar. Google finds him or her.

So after a bit of research, it seems clear from different sources the 12504 is the hood for the pre asph summilux 35mm. However, I've yet to see any generic hoods which will go on. I am assuming a filter on this lens can only be used in conjunction with the 12504...is this true? Might there be alternatives?

The hood for the new asph summicron 35mm also fits. You can get a fitting cap for this hood.

The 12504 is the original hood for this lens, that takes series VII and also slim E48 filters. This hood is expensive and difficult to find in case you have to replace it. If you want to use a cap with this hood, every E58 snap-in front-cap fits nicely to the 12504.

Despite the price and rarity, the 12504 is also not very effective against flare. A better solution is to use a 12526 rectangular hood for this lens (the one from the 35mm Summicron ASPH) together with E39 filter that will be hold in place by a rubber o-ring glued into the hood. If I can find some time, I can take a photo of my set-up.

If you are looking for a generic hood or filter holder, the outer size of the 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH is "A42". That means any clamp-on filter designed for 42mm should work also.

maddoc, I am visiting Japan in October so I imagine I will be able to find many of these filters/hoods in used shops in Shinjuku and the likes but I assume prices will be higher than out of New York.

Will camera shops like Map Camera carry many of these accesories or are they purely for neurotic collectors?

Thanks for that maddoc, just tried an old folding Summicron hood to see if it fits.

Seems to work OK, but think the retaining claws may be a little too thick to fit into the narrow Summilux groove. Would be concerned about it falling off with a hard knock.
On my M4 it doesn't seem to cut off the viewfinder any more than the 12504 , it just blocks in a different place. Will have to shoot a couple frames to see it has problems with vignetting.

It will certainly block stray light and can be quite compact in its folded state.

I think that you might find such a hood in a shop in Shinjuku (or around). Since I live in Sapporo, I ordered mine from a camera shop in NY, was very easy and fast.

Oh Well. I blew my opportunity to have hand delivered it...LOL ...:D

Glenn, that looks very promising ! The possibility to fold the hood is interesting, makes the camera more compact.
