35mm summicron v summilux

Hadn't really used my old 35mm pre asph summilux for a while thought I'd see how it compared to my version four 35mm summicron the lens I use 99% of the time, both shot wide open summicron first.

Not bad really, pleasantly surprised.

Both beautiful in their own way.

The Summilux is more special but the Summicron is more accurate.
Actually what I would expect.

You have an excellent copy of the Summilux. I have owned a few these 15 years and most were practically unusable wide open they were so soft except for the really late serial numbers.

I might appreciate its "special" qualities more now, but years ago I had a black, goggled Summilux that wasn't usable wide open, by my standards, and I'm talking for 8x10s, not pixel peeping. Now I have a V3 Summicron, and it's amazing. That Summilux put me off using any lens near wide open for decades, but I'm cured of that now. 🙂

I did the same comparison some time ago - pre ashp lux vs cron V4. Similar results - wide open lux is soft, from f2.8 they are very close. So I have sold lux - that glow is not my cup of tea, although some people like it.

I have both lenses, and I like using both of them for their qualities. I added last week a Biogon 35/2 for a modern look.

The light is not as good now but you get the idea, I like to use it either wide open or past f4.

Cheers funny thing I've had it for years I think I only paid £250, it has a few battle scars and I've had it in bits a few times.
