35mm Summilux ASPH v. 35mm Summicron ASPH

[35mmdelux]

Except for the extra speed of the Summilux, what if any are the discernible differences between the 35 Summilux ASPH and the 35mm Summicron ASPH?

Erwin Puts notes some minor differences between the two lenses but I think it would be hard to find meaningful differences in normal photographic work. I have the 35 Summilux asph, 28 Summicron asph and 50 Summilux asph. All superb. Joe

I use both and because of it's size, I've started to use the f1.4 only when I really need the speed. The f2 is so much smaller (and ergonomics counts with me) as a package that it always gets the nod when I need sharp. If you're into sharpness, I think my f2 is a smidgin sharper than my f1.4 across the board, and both have a very nice rendering of OOF areas at big apertures, with the f1.4 perhaps being a tad more pleasing to the eye (at least my eye). I understand that Leica is considering a re-issue of the f1.4 to fix the back-focusing issues the current lens has with the M8.

To me there's not much diff except for the 1-stop faster speed of the Lux and more compact dimension of the Summicron. I do think the Summilux has slightly harsher bokeh.

It took me a while to transition from the Summicron 35 to the Summilux. I was used to the more compact dimensions of the Cron. Since my preferred film speed is 64-160-200 I needed the extra speed even tho the cost of the Lux was substantially greater.

The 35/1.4 asph has more residual spherical aberration than the Summicron ASPH, which means that the f1.4 displays focus shift but the f2 does not. My sample of the f1.4 also flares much more than the f2.

The 35 Cron ASPH is the finest lens I have ever used - almost impossible to take a bad shot with it. Save yourself some $ and get the Cron

I have both & am hard pressed to recollect any differences. I lean much more heavily on the 'lux as I do a lot of low-light shooting & it also serves as my normal lens on the M8.
