35mm: trade in 1,4 for 2,0?

For my X Pro 1, should I sell my 35 f1,4 to fund a 35 f2,0 while they're on sale? The main reason would be for the faster autofocus as I've heard the IQ is very similar. I don't believe I'd miss the one stop of light.

If it were me, and I had the funds, I'd just buy the 35 f2 first simply because it's a very good deal at $299. You could keep the lens you prefer and sell off the other with very little loss.

35/1.4 advantages:

• The obvious one stop increase in aperture
• The level of on-board, software lens corrections is low

35/1.4 disadvantages:

• Older, slower AF motor technology which affects performance on all X bodies.
• MF collar is less refined
• Larger and heavier

35/2 advantages:

• Newest AF motor technology, so AF is quicker, and quieter for all bodies
• Superior MF collar experience
• Smaller and lighter

35/2.0 disadvantages:

• IQ relies more on on-board software correction parameters, especially for barrel distortion correction
• The obvious one stop decrease in aperture

I have used both lenses quite a bit. I received one of the first 35/2 AF lenses in the US. I sent the 35/1.4 to KEH.

The 35/2's increase in AF performance on newer bodies (I use a X-T1) is significant. I also like the smaller size. I searched my LR library and found very few Fujifilm photos made at f 1.4.

In my experience LR CC does a fine job using the Fujifilm lens correction parameters for the 35/2. Some have noted here is a bit of over correction which leads to a small degree of pin-cushion distortion. This would be trivial to remedy automatically upon raw import into LR using a user custom lens preset. I don't bother. The level of micro-contrast, flare resistance and bokeh rendering are typical of all XF R lenses.

I tested my 1.4 on an X-Pro II and the shop's 35/2 as well.
The 1.4 seemed a lot snappier on the X-Pro II vs my X-T1.
The 35/2 is definitely faster on the X-T1.

I've decided to keep the 1.4 and upgrade the body 🙂

I can't see selling the 1.4 to gain the f2 unless:

*You have a weather sealed body or intend to get one and need a weather sealed normal to go with it.
* You cannot live with the degree of corner intrusion with the Pro1/Pro2 optical viewfinder caused by the end of the 1.4's barrel.
*You need the slightly quicker AF provided by the f2.

To say the f2 is "smaller and lighter" is factually true but practically irrelevant imo.

A Vespa scooter is "smaller and lighter" than a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The difference is significant.

OTOH,...

f1.4 : 2.6" x 2.2" and 6.6 oz.

f 2.0: 2.4" x 1.8" and 6.0 oz.

I think since the rebate will go into July I'll put the 35 1,4 on the camera and spend some time shooting with it and see if I can capture the magic.

It sure seems quicker. And it hunts less and is quieter. I have both at the moment and am trying to sell my 1.4. With the X-Pro's high ISO capability, I don't feel a need for the extra stop. I like the size and design better, too.

The only thing I prefer on the 1.4 is the more certain aperture click-stops. Otherwise, to be able to get a lens of this quality for $299 is pretty amazing.

I have both lenses and their individual qualities mean I intend to keep them both.

The 35/2 does have quieter and faster AF. It's also smaller and thinner. Personally, I like it for the size/shape more than the image quality although the image quality is, indeed, excellent. The shape of the 35/2 reminds me of the 50mm Summicron I used in my Leica days--one of my favorite all time lenses.

The 35/1.4, while being a stop faster, is not really that much larger, especially when the 35/2 is outfitted with the optional Fuji vented hood. It's just a fatter lens overall. I can't really identify the "why" of it but pictures done with the 35/1.4 just seem a little more magical to me.

As stated, I'm keeping both lenses. But, then, I've always been a sucker for a good 50mm (or 50mm equivalent) lens.

This is one of those times when you cannot go wrong. It's more of a faster AF / WR vs. faster aperture battle really. Both are great, both are great price points, etc.

great thread and something that I've been reading/researching online for the past 2 hours.

I'm going back to an X-E2 as Sony A7 cameras IMO have no 'soul', getting a 18-55 and 18mm for sure but can't decide between the 35mm 1.4 or 2, I've owned two 1.4 in the past but I think this time I'm going for the WR 2 as the smaller size, faster AF and sale price has caught my attention.

I think it's the smarter lens for the X-E2 due to size. The 1.4 always seemed large on everything but the X-Pro series.

That extra stop isn't just for ISO and SS, it also gives you more subject isolation, which people often gush about using words like 'pop' and '3D'


The software correction on modern lenses is great, but the 35 F1.4 doesn't need it at all (source: Fujifilm facebook page)


It's weird.... whenever this subject comes up on the various fora, there's always a significant contingent that pushes forth the proposition of the F2

but whenever someone asks 'should I buy a 50mm Summarit or pay more for a Summicron' people are a lot quicker to suggest the faster more expensive lens...


F2 FF eqv Vs F2.8 in the case of the Fuji, one is optically superior AND faster, and has many people who love its rendering (me incl obv)


For my 2 pennies, it's a no brainer...

Ordered the f2 last night tho I do have the f1.4 already on my Xpro 1. Don't think the slower lens will be a problem for me so I reckon my 1.4 will be up for sale soon.

I wanted to re-try the updated (firmware) 35/1.4, but no good used deal came up, and in the meantime I found $299 authorized dealer copy in stock so I went for the 35/2. This is my second try at this lens, and so far I'm liking it. Looks sexy as heck on X-Pro2. I will try to revisit the 35/1.4 at some point as well.

It's kind of like newer Summicron 50 vs older Summilux 50 (in terms of effective DOF, it's more like Summarit vs Summicron I guess). I do prefer the older Lux and that's what I kept for my M system, and I don't know if I end up doing the same for X system. I guess time will tell...

For now, I'm enjoying the 35/2.
