35mm ultron too much contrast?

I just developed my first roll of tri-x from my 35mm ultron, and it seems pretty contrasty to me, and a little thin. I think I may prefer my 35/2.5 cs actually (which I just sold). Does anybody else find this? I guess maybe I'm after more creamy/smooth tones. I should probably try different film, but maybe I should go for a nokton?

What film?

Your experience is actually opposite of what others have reported. The Ultron is expected to have less contrast than the Skopar.

My 35 Ultron is really not very contrasty - in fact I wish it would give a little bot more contrast for my color work.

I use tri-x in D76 1:1, which may be part of the issue, and let's just say I'm not the greatest developer by a long stretch. I've looked up some ultron images on flickr, and I see similarities to what I'm getting. Compared to my color skopar, the ultron isn't quite as sharp, but I think the tonality is pretty close between the two.

hm...I would say the skopar is generaly the higher contrast lens but I think it strongly has to do with your developing, I have developed shots using delta 3200 in a 1:19 ilford lc-29 mix and came out with very nice smooth negatives with out any problems which is great given the skopars reputation as a high contrast lens and delta 3200 as not the most forgiving film

I sold off my skopar and kept the ultron for the single reason that the skopar was too contrasty for my taste.

Must be a development issue...?

Yeah, I think it was a development issue. I ran another roll today shot with a different lens (the 15mm) and it was also really contrasty and grainy. My mixture must have been to much developer, or agitated too much or something...I have another roll sent out that should be back by the end of the week so I'll see then...

That's why i sold my skopar as well, too much contrast, too sharp, not soft enough.

A recent shot with the CV 35/1.7 -

The lens did pretty well with difficult light. Sean Reid considered it to be a good sunny day lens based on a quick test - I think he is working on a fuller test.
