First of all, thanks to all for hints about cleaning old negs and slides. 🙂

(not to show my true age, but ...) Here's one that HAS to be one of my very first RF photos, and probably my first roll of color in a RF ever! The slide is Ektachrome, processed by Kodak, embossed "Aug 70" making it 35 years old as of this month! This was always one of my faves from the very early days, and I once had a 5x7 print which has long ago faded into oblivion.

I'm not even sure if this was the regular Ektachrome of the day (Ektachrome-X?) or the so-called High Speed Ektachrome ... what was it, 160?

Fortunately this one didn't require too much medicine or surgery to get a good print and scan. Just a good cleaning with the canned air and some minor touching up in Photoshop, mostly levels and a few remaining dust specs.

I just did an 8x10 of it and I'm amazed how well this came out. I don't remember my original print showing nearly this much clean detail of the ironwork.

Anyway, for 35 years old, I think it survived rather well. 🙂

Scanned from an original? Interesting colouration. Almost a 'sepia tone' but in colour. Something to do with the age of the print you scanned or did you do that in photoshop?

The slides do hold up pretty well. The photo below was shot on Kodachrome (I think) in 1963 with a Canon IV SB (Wish I still had it). I'm in the photo and the clue is I'm not wearing a dress. Shot some Anscochrome during the same period and all those slides have faded into oblivion.

This was a scan of the original slide. Yes, the warmish cast was there in the original print too. Evening sun and the haze (spelled s-m-o-g) emphasized it.

The only thing I did in Photoshop was to normalize the levels and clone out a few dust specs. I take that back, I cropped a bit. 🙂

The 8x10 print does show the grain quite well, but it's really not that bad.

OK dmr436, just what kind of camera did you use to shoot this photo? I'm just curious.

Ive got some Anscochrome (or Agfachrome...something about a war) processed at home by my mother in 1939...looks great. As well I've got thousands of EX slides, processed by myself at Media Generalists along about 1972...barely changed (but they have, just a little). And I've got some great old CPS negatives (C22) run by one of the decent labs, as well as Vericolor II that still looks OK. And hundreds of Kodachrome II that seem unchanged from the Sixties.

Most of this film has been treated badly, stored in garages and closets in places that are humid or incredibly dry, certainly running up over 120deg F and freezing.

IMO most faded/changed slides are the result of bad processing. Few labs ever ran E4 or C22 properly, for example.
