$3k for Chrome M8 New. Never used.

On Ebay there is a M8 Chrome for $3,000 New never used in box. Shutter never fired. Should I take the plunge? I need a second body for backup. Seller says if it has any problems, he will refund and/or have Leica fix any issues at no cost to me.

If you feel the need to buy new go for it. I love the chrome one I got last June having had a black. Mine is sn 333x had less 70 clicks and cost $2500. Vertical alignment was slightly off but I have a tool. Did you ask the seller why he was selling and why zero usage? Seems odd unless he is a dealer.

no, i wouldn't. the warranty is non-transferable and i wouldn't want the uncertain dependency on the prior owner if the camera needs service.

me, i'd call tony at popflash (or another dependable dealer, your call) and see what's available.

you a pro? reason i ask is that there would seem to be other, cheaper gear backup plans than a new (or like new) M8 for the hobbyist, like a good used M8 for approx 2/3 the price of your eBay target or a film M for a less than $1K.

Well I am a professional who uses the M8 for digital and still uses medium format (6x9) and large format chromes. The fact is the M8 I have is the ONLY digital I have, and when I need Nikon or Canon I rent it because all of my lens money over the years went to Leica and larger formats. Knock on wood, my M8 has never failed me and is past 70,000 exposures since I bought it new in April 2007. I guess I have that borrowed time feeling where I feel right now, a second used M8 makes more sense than the M9 in that I wait every other generation for digital cameras. I feel the M9 is an improvement, but not the thousands more in cost over a used M8. I guess if PopFlash has one similar to the one on Ebay for $2,500 or even $2700, that would be fine. I am in no mood to sink 7K in for the M9. I must admit, the new Fuji has my eye. Even if I cannot change lenses, for $1000, new under warranty, it looks very promising.

A new in box M8 seems to make sense for a collector. But you are going to use it.

Is it worth $1,000 that it was sitting in a box? You should find one that has been sitting on a shelf (there are plenty).

I got mine for $1,900 and it looks brand new.

sounds like it definitely has issues, but the seller may be wanting to pass those issues/delays on to a collector buyer. The collector buyer will just keep it in the box ...

i have an M8 and love it. but, no, i wouldn't be spending $3,000 on an M8 these days. i'd either get a used one for much less or bite the bullet on the M9. (as someone pointed out, you're not going to have a warranty on this M8.)

No point of spending $3k on "new" M8 when u can get a lightly used one with low shutter count in $2k mark. Spend the extra grand towards lenses 🙂

Sounds rather high these days'. I gave up my M8 because I was expecting something different when I owned it. I also had three fantastic primes. I really miss the glass but not the M8. Had I kept the 50-lux' I would have been able to justify the M9, but not now. Anyway, just sharing...

Seems like a fairly high price to me, too; but IMO the key issue is the warranty. It's not enough if the card is in the box; it can't have been registered via Internet either.

An M8 for 3k? that's asking a little too much. For that price, you could just get M8.2. I paid 2500 for my M8 with 4k actuation back in 2009.

I'm in the buy one chaeper camp. By the way i own m9s and for me I cold not shoot with an m8 ever again. No I am not rich or even close but a poor working pro.

i got mine brand new in box without manual for USD2.55k including shipping to malaysia. I donno if it has any problem or not, should be getting it by tomorrow or wednesday. Will let you know if it has any problem or not once i got my camera.

If you have the warranty...$3000 in an unopened box could be worth it. If not, then get the M8.2.

As a recent M8 buyer the one thing I wanted was a guarantee thats why I bought from a shop that gave me a year, and the price I paid was ebay prices, the camera looks new came with all the stuff including a never-ready case (which I ebayed for £100) but no box. The most I ever spend on ebay is £400 after that I don't think its worth the risk. Most of the prices on ebay are to close or even more than high street/mail order prices now.

Be very careful with those 3k adds. Bunch of them, including white M8s, M9, lenses, etc., are obviously fake.
