Hi, as the thread title says, my wife and I will go to Honolulu for 4 days. Well, we both want to visit Paris :)D see nice thread --> "one week in Paris..."), this time we cannot go there and go to Hawaii.

Any "must see" places? Good spots for photo shooting?

Thanks in advance.

Go to the North Shore - great beaches, surfing, monster size waves. Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Haleiwa.
In Honolulu there is Waikiki Beach (very small) and Diamond Head. You can see the Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Try the trip the Windward side (east coast) to the Polynesian Cultural Center, Sacred Falls - lots of the time you are driving very near the shore. Assorted parks along the way.
The Pali (cliffs) are magnificent. OH!! go the the Pali lookout, overlooking Kailua / Kaneohe.

sjw617: Thank you for your post. Usually I do research the spots very well, but this time I have not enough time to do it. I would like to visit the Pali.:)

I also like spending time on the North Shore. Hike out to Ka'ena Point, and there may still be albatrosses. Drive to Hale'iwa afterward for dinner and a shave ice or stop at one of the shrimp farms in Kahuku. If you go to the Kaneohe, you can visit a heiau (ancient Hawai'ian temple) behind the YMCA, where you can also see a taro patch and some beautiful old trees. The pali is neat--very windy at times.

Further south from diamond head you will find hanauma bay - neat place to snorkel for a bit.

I visited oahu a couple summers ago, and met with a member of rff (hey, suzums, you still read this?!), had a ton of fun.

We tried to get to diamon head before I left, BUT, they wouldn't let us in because we missed the cut-off point. So.. uhm.. we found another way in (*cough* jumped a fence or two, climbed up the side of the crater, walked along a no-path at the top of the crater) and got the BEST views ever.. It was helluva fun :D :D :D The way back is where I tested my new Zeiss Ikon's durability - it hung on my neck and drug through the dirt as we slid on our butts down down down... :D :D :D

Unfortunately, I was there during the season North Shore exposed me to the great Pacific Lake. I swam across waimea bay several times

Be sure to check out Hanama Bay beach, great for snorkeling.;)

Yeah, I forgot that. Hanauma Bay is also nice at sunrise. You can get the sun splitting the U shaped bay. Also fairly close to Honolulu.

Hanauma Bay gets fairly crowded, and you can't get in once the parking lot is full, so go early, if that's of interest.

If you get there and it's closed, you can keep driving to the Halona Blowhole. The small beach to the right is where they filmed the famous beach scene in _From Here to Eternity_, and it happens to be a nice beach. To the left is Sandy Beach which is a more challenging place to swim or surf, if you do those things. I think that's the beach where Mark Spitz got caught in the undertoe and had to be rescued by lifeguards. There's also a nice field nearby where people fly kites, and if the lunch truck is there, I recommend the Mahi Mahi platter.

Keep driving toward the windward side, and you might take the trail up to the Makapu'u lighthouse, where you can see whales this time of year (bring binoculars). Makapu'u Beach is also nice, just past the lighthouse.

If you are into "street photography", Chinatown, esp. early on Saturday mornings. In particular, Oahu and Kekaulike Markets for photographing people shopping for "exotic foods".

Some good suggestions given so far, but definitely STICK TO MARKED TRAILS unless you want to be rescued by the Honolulu Fire Dept. and labeled another "dumb tourist". :) Staying on the trail also ensures that you are minimizing damage to Hawai`i's fragile ecosystem and environment.

If you don't mind taking the same postcard photos as a million other people, here is link to a popular photobook on Oahu sights:

If "nature photography" is your thing, I'd suggest you get out of Honolulu - in any direction! Any chance of you spending a day or two on another island?

As with many other tourist spots, don't leave your expensive camera equipment in your rent-a-car. oh yeah, another piece of advice: "Never turn your back to the ocean".

Have fun,

I was at the north end of Oahu near the base, standing almost 20ft above the waterline taking pictures, and the next wave got me wet up to the waist.

Thank you guys!

"Never turn your back to the ocean"...I will never forget this.

I will keep myself on the side of typical tourists. I will not attempt to challenge the nature of Hawaii in the mountain and in the sea. But we will enjoy there :)
