still playing with the new machine, like it a lot. but reading the manual...finally...it says "...up to 2 gigs..." when referring to the SD card it will accept. is there a reason i can't use my 4 gig card from one of my other devices? i realise the "gas tank" type dials on the top...a novel gadget...only reads up to 999 images or so but that isn't really so much an issue for me.
i found Fuji NP80 batteries at a local appliance store (Harvey Norman here) at A$60 each, i got two. so a trip out in the bush with a handful of bateries and a fat card would be a nice day out. but, yes, of course i can take more SD cards with me.....
but with this new RD camera i feel a bit guilty i am not giving so much time to my film loyalties. my traditional family in Danmark would be very disappointed i think, in my old age.

Hi dan,

the limit of capacity depends on the "old" DOS partition table FAT16, that is used by the camera (and many others, too). FAT16 is limited by 2GB max. partitions.
The newer partitions, called FAT32, allow to use (adress) more than 2GB in one partition but the R-D1 seems not to know FAT32.
Theoretically you can create a FAT16-partition on bigger cards but most time this won´t be useful. Just a 2GB-card can hold more than 600 jpg-pictures taken with the R-D1...
Practically get some extra SD-cards for a few bucks and be happy!

;-)

Regards, Axel

I also tried to use my 4gb cards in my R-D1 with no success... The same with my Leica D2, they only support 2gb but considering they are 5-6 mp cameras, there is no need for more capacity... cheers!

I think I mentioned the local wedding photog...

I think I mentioned the local wedding photog...

who did a wedding on a 4 Gb card and it did a "brain fart" on him. No pix recovered. Now uses and rotates 1 Gb cards.

kuzano, cheers. actually i liked your first version of the "weeding" photographer... but i get the drift, promise NOT to try it. i'm not a "let's take it apart and see how it works" kinda guy since i disassembled my gandfather's 10 x 8 brass barrel lens studio camera in 1952 at the curious old age of five. that was one time my father DIDN'T say, "this will hurt me more than it hurts you...!"

thanks, all. promise not to, promise! i bought three 2 gig cards on the weekend based on your input and the punter at K-Mart said, "why don't you just get a....."
