40mm Nocton SC - review

He says something like "decent sharpness at f/1.4, pretty good at f/2-2.8 and then getting better and better." "The feeling and sharpness reminds me of an older 35mm Summilux" One of his friends doubts that it really is a single coat, maybe rather a simpler kind of multi-coating?

When it comes to colour film, he thinks the colour rendition is slightly colder than his 1980 35mm Summicron but equal sharpness. He doesn't seem to be able to tell whether the SC is better or worse than the MC.

Conclusion: "Works very well with my M6, a perfect street photo lens"

Thanks Emil. For what it's worth, I pretty much feel the same about it including
the comparison to the Summicron.

Thank Emil !!!

40mm Nokton´s lens diagram is almost identical to 35mm Summilux pre-asph / 35mm Summicron v4.

I'm a relative novice but I find the Nokton 40/1.4 SC is very prone to flare. Anyone have the same experience?

The SC Nokton is not a flare prone lens. In fact it flares as much as a multicoated CLE Rokkor. Thats a testament to the quality of glasses used in this lens that it can rival a older multicoated lens in flare control. If your new to rangerfinders its sometimes forgotten that you cant see the flare occurring like you can in an SLR where you instinctively tilt the camera and lens automatically to avoid it when it appears. With rangefinders the viewfinder doesnt usually show the same degree of flare as the lens and as such they appear to flare more when you get your photos developed.

I have the multi-coated version. I have noticed quite a bit of vignetting (sky shots) even with f/8 and smaller aperture.

Peter the 40mm Nokton doesn't vignette at smaller apertures, I think what you are seeing is a lens polarization effect that you often see in shy shots with a large number of lenses.

Confirm that. I see that also with other CV lenses, like the 28 and 21 color
skopars. And with the Nokton at faster apertures. No big deal really.

I've both the 40SC and 35v4, and, in terms of tea: the 35v4 places a pearl on the tongue... yet the 40SC, although less balanced, renders a mighty fine image, with a bit more tannin 😉

Why both? Image is everything! Why the SC? Well, why not!(Well, really, it was the cost was less than either version new... oh, well...).

I really like the CV40 I have, despite my minority status among other posts concerning this CV FL.

Does anyone /see/ that difference between the two versions? Even the vaulted "ReidReviews" uses the MC version only!

rgds,
Dave
