43mm UV/IR filter suitable for Leica M8

Hi:

I have Nokton 35 lens which I'm going to use on Leica M8. But I don't know which suitable UV/IR filter I can use on this lens with 43mm thread. I know only Heliopan ES43 and B+W 486. Or should I buy 43 to 46 step pitch ring and buy UV/IR filter for 46mm?

I'm using the B+W 43mm as I find the step up rings to be unreliable. My experience is that the rings bind or freeze up. This almost always occurs in the field. I just find it a better solution to have filters in the size you need.

The BW 486 filters are a bit stronger than the Leica filters, and may give you odd color casts from the over-correction, compared to the Leica.

There are Leica 43mm UV/IR filters, but I'm not sure if they fit CVs, the BWs fit CVs and Leica but I'm not sure if it's the other way around.

Also, make sure your hood solution will work with the different thickness of a Leica (if it fits) 43mm filter vs the thicker 486 rim (which should fit).

A 43-46 step up ring should work, but will probably be worse for flare and ghosting by putting the filter further from the front element.

When they do that just press them on a non-slip surface and turn, which will free them effortlessly. I actually tend to use a rubber sole of a shoe for that.

When I had that lens, I used B+W silver one to match the color. But you can also search if Marumi makes 43mm. When I asked them about 60mm, the answer was "no", and ended up paying extra for Leica E60...

I've been using Heliopans for everything. I haven't been able to get them to ghost or flare, which I can't say for either the B+W or Leica. I keep my 2 freebie Leica filters as spares. The only non-Heliopan I use is on my 105 Nikkor, which takes a 52mm and I couldn't find one in Heliopan so I got a B+W. I have a really deep hood for that lens and it's a telephoto, so flare from light sources outside the frame aren't as bad as with wider lenses.

I even use a Heliopan 43mm on my 50 Summilux. I had to remove the glass and insert it into a Leitz filter mount salvaged from a cracked green filter (so the OEM hood would fit over it).

The CV hood on the Nokton works fine with filters as it is a bayonet mount same as the ZM

I have a B+W 43mm filter that doesn't fit snugly on my Nikkor 50/1.4, the threads are a little off. It fits fine on an adapter for 40mm to 43mm.

So I finally decided to buy B&W 486 43mm filter. I found the local seller online who used it on Nokton 35, too. It'll arrive day after tomorrow, then only I can say. Compared to the original price and price of Leica filters, this was way cheaper. 🙂

And better, Leica is a Marumi filters.
