Urk. Talk about an impulse bid. I've been meaning to get a LTM camera of some kind and I like that length of lens, but I hadn't gotten that far. Guess I'll just have to buy one if I win it...

Is that typical for a Canon lens set? Seems like a good deal, with the finder and the original hood. Recently I had to pay more than I cared to for an 85/2 Sonnar that I really didn't want or need just to get the original Zeiss hood -- I think I should sell everything and buy a Canon😉

that's a very good price for lens, finder and hood.
at kevin's camera the hood would cost more than all that. i think they are pricey to begin with but they seem to have some very nice stuff.
i think sonnar's have always been more costly than canon's but i really haven't paid that much attention.

Just curious: does the Leica lens really excel over a Zeiss 85/2 Sonnar? I really know little of the Leica lenses and am genuinely curious. Thanks!

I use both Zeiss and Leica glass - and they are both capable of achieving amazing results.
Leica glass is expensive and apart for the brand mark-up the main reason is a LOT of R&D that enabled Leica to produce the best 35mm rangefinder lenses ever produced.
If the Zeiss Sonnar 85/2 or Leica Summicron 90 or Summilux 75 is 'the better' lens I don't know. These are all high quality lenses that are capable of producing amazing result. Leica often do win when shooting wide open though where the lens design really shines.

The Planar design has been around since the mid 1890s and is the most copied/plagiarized lens in the world.
I'm still not sure why they didn't make a 45mm or 60mm Planar for the Contax G series. According to my big book of optics, the Planar design beats the Sonnar design at the normal focal lenghts.

The 135 that sold is the early F4 version; the 135 f3.5 improved optically and is the more desirable lens for use. The F4 is more desirable to a collector. This one looks like it is going to Japan. The Nikkor 135 F4 goes for a fortune compared to the optically superior Nikkor 13.5cm F3.5 lens.
The 8.5cm F2 Sonnar was "THE" lens in its day. My Nikkor 8.5cm f2 holds its own against any of my newer optics. It is a copy of the Zeiss lens. The Sonnar is supposed to be sharper than the original 90mm Summicron, but the latter may be more pleasing for portraits as the vintage Leica glass usually produces less "harsh" contrast.
Many "new" optics carry the names of the vintage lenses, but are a radically different optical formula.

AFAIK, the Sonnar was a very popular design due to its excellent flare resistance even for fast lenses like the 50mm f/1.5 The planar, even if considered sharper, was more flare-prone, therefore its rise begun with the (multi)coating technology only.

I never considered a Planar/Sonnar comparison before. I know from experience that the Sonnar was an improvement over the Tessar (in most situations) that Zeiss also offered earlier with the Contax. I also use to shoot with a 50/1.4 Planar when I owned some Contax SLR gear and it seemed to be an exceptional lens (nice color and bokeh).
I have a 150mm Sonnar and a 120mm Planar for a 6x6 camera, maybe it's time for a comparison...hmmmm
