486/IR cut filter advice for 40mm threads

Folks, I have a bunch of Canon lenses that take 40mm filters. I want to be able to put a good IR cut filter in front of them for use on the R-D1 (and maybe an M8 someday). The options I can think of, and the questions I have about them, are:

1. 40mm-40.5mm step-up adapter
   Does anyone know if this interferes with the ability to mount hoods that use a 42mm clamp-on attachment?
   
2. 40mm-39mm step-down adapter
   Does this cause vignetting on some of the wide and/or fast lenses, such as the 25/3.5, 28/3.5, 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.5, 50/1.8?
   
3. Series VI adapter (40mm screw-in or 42mm clamp-on)
   Has anyone ever seen a Series VI IR cut filter?
   
4. Series VII adapter (40mm screw-in or 42mm clamp-on)
   AFAIK, only the Canon 50/1.5 hood fits Series VII, which is needlessly big IMO -- any other good hood options for Series VII?
   
5. Custom 40mm filter
   Does anyone know if any company does that?

Also, the 25/3.5, 28/3.5, 28/2.8 and 35/2.8 (black/chrome) have well-recessed front elements, making a hood unnecessary for those lenses. If I stick a filter out front, I'll probably need to shade it with a hood, right? Has anyone out there found a workable hood for the 25mm or 28mm?

stalk ebay for 40mm filters.
it can be done.

cameraquest has great custom hoods in 40mm size, 30 bucks last time i looked.

I mostly use heavystar 40-43s, then a 43 to whatever, lately it's been a 40-43 to 43-46 to 46-52 with 52mm Hoya R72 filter, but could also put an IR cut filter on at 43 or 46 if desired.

Hmm, I guess I blew it with my thread title, too bad I can't edit it.
I'm specifically interested in 486/IR cut filters, which don't seem to be available in 40mm or Series 6, and only from Leica for $200 in Series 7.

I suppose I could try a 40-43mm adapter -- I have a nice CV hood that I'm currently using on my UC-Hex and Nikkor 50/1.4 LTM lenses. Probably reduce the risk of vignetting on the wide angle lenses as well....

With my J-3, I use a 40.5 to 43mm step up adaptor.
Works very well and is pretty much unnoticeable.
43mm uv/ir filters are quite easy to find.
