What focal length would you use for head and shoulder shots and which for full length portraiture??

I don't shoot portraits with my 4x5 but:

Multiply the focal length you would use in 35mm by 3 to get an equivalent focal length for 4x5. If you normally use a 100mm in 35mm for the head and shoulder shot, than use a 300mm for the 4x5. A 50mm for full length becomes a 150mm in 4x5.

260 to 300 for just head and shoulders, I just used my standard 135 or so if I remember right for full length.

Should be some great buys on EvilBay these days for them, I should look but.....

I've got my eye on a 270mm f9 Schneider-G Claron lens on a Copal 1 shutter which would do what I want based on my use of the 90mm for head and shoulders.

I'm assuming you use it for landscape??

How would you rate the 210mm for this type of photography??

This was shot with a 250mm lens on 4x5:

This is what I am looking for.

My 210mm wasted too much film since it did not fill the frame.. Too close and the model ended up with a Jimmy Durante nose..

I'm really a wide angle shooter. My favorite lens is my little 65mm f8 Ilex Acugon. Just covers 4x5. I can use just a little rear tilt to maximize focus. After that, I shoot a SA 90mm f8. I have a 240mm f5.5 Tele-Xenar for my long lens. Rarely use my 150mm Caltar II-N.

I have a 75mm, 90mm, 150mm & 210mm and am able to shoot just about anything with them...I would like something in the 240-300mm range...Have been looking at Imagons...but no one's giving them away and never seen one at a garage sale...
150 or 210 for portraits...

I consider 150 to be slightly wide ... math/theory says it's "normal", but it just doesn't seem that way when I use it. So I would use that for full length.

For 240mm fl (which I'd like to have), Fujinon makes (made) a 240/9 that I'd love to have. The only recent ePay auction closed at $415US in Copal shutter mounted on a Cambo board.

300 Bellows Draw

300 Bellows Draw

If you're using a 4x5 press camera for this application, just ensure that the bellows has enough extension for the 300mm lens. Keep in mind that for portraits, the subject is much closer to the camera than infinity, so the bellows draw will need to be more than 300mm.

For instance, I don't believe that an Anniversary 4x5 Speed Graphic bellows will extend to 300mm(i.e. 12 inches).

The 5" on 4x5 with 180mm exactly matches a 50mm length on 35. You get more width though.

75mm on 35 matches 270 on 4x5, again with extra width as the aspect ratios are different.

Just proportion what you want remembering 100mm/360 match is the same, but you will be further from the subject. About 50% more if memory serves.

I'm a bit confused here.. I've always heard to determine the equivalent 35mm/4x5 you multiply the 35mm focal length by 3 to get the 4x5 equivalent. If that's the case a 75mm in 35mm format would equal 225mm not 270mm

I'm using a 4x5 view so it has more than enough bellows extension..

Unfortunately, that also means you can't use barrel lenses. The shutterless Tele-optar 360mm would work quite nicely here. It's a telephoto design, so it works quite well with my SG's with the rear shutter.

240 minimum- if you have the draw, 300 would be great, 360 even if it's bright enough...

I'm watching a couple of 270's and plan to get a 300 in the near future..

Amazing prices on LF glass these days. FYI- the Fuji's are really nice, but I'm a sucker for the Nikon LF stuff. The 240 is my main studio lens on the 810.

My current project. A Graphic View 4x5.

I found a 250mm on ebay today and hope to have it soon.
