50/1.5 Jupiter J-3 LTM back in production at Lomo

I don't think(nor saw) anyone said it's junk since the original J3 is very good already. *winking to the home-calibrated J3 on Zorki-6 by my hand*

It seems to be well received by J-3 and Sonnar experts, so to speak. I must have been wrong in saying that this is too costly prematurely. I spent my "lens money" on a CV 50/1.1 before the announcements were made on the J3+. For the time being, I am not buying one. Maybe later?

Sonnar lovers, enjoy the J3+.

Saw that at leicaplace and I have yet to say that there is not a single photo to demonstrate the capabilities of the J3+. The only photo over there is from a 1934 5cm F2 CZJ Sonnar.
Also just saying that a lens is good is different to comparing with something else and proving it makes the run for its money.

Didn't have to look far, I think the third comment on the first page from someone who I won't name..

"599€ is way too much for an "Art Lens". "Art Lens" is Lomography's way of defining lenses with low performance"

C'mon! So far it is becoming of those endless threads about a lens' with not a single photo taken with it, not even some camera/j3+ pron.

So we (not you in particular) go from impatiently calling the lens a rip-off, to impatiently demanding a full set of test shots.

The lens is only available a few days. C'mon!

There is every reason to believe it's quite nice, and if so, hardly overpriced, since there is not a single new 50mm 1.5 or faster, or even a f/2, this cheap, and the older ones are notorious for build and calibration issues.

Not so. If you are in the US, you can buy a new VM Nokton 50/1.5 from Europe for less today.

Don't get me wrong, I applaud the making of this new lens. If or not the price is right is an individual decision, but in the end it's one more choice which is a good thing. I might have considered it, if I didn't already have a nice and clean 1951 J3 that is perfectly calibrated throughout the focus range on my 240. I wonder if the handling of this new lens is improved, the aluminum build of my J3 feels a bit fragile.

Roland.

My two ltm J-3s all have a focus shift. I have to readjust the focus at a smaller aperture. The J-3 seems to have a higher micro-contrast than J-8s, and that is why I like it.

ahh...but they are backordered ;)

good point Roland, I did not know about that option :)

Here you go huckleberry.

This link came from the same thread as the initially linked post from Brian (and, in fact, these are his images as well).

Thanks, did not see that.

Yet, it looks like it does not offer the "phenomenal" results one would expect from a such expensive lens. There are others, even faster, even cheaper lenses that outperform it for less. Also if one moves to non ltm cameras then the options get more, better, and far less expensive.

I have mixed feelings about that. I love my Jupiter-3, but mostly because it comes from another era giving a taste from the optics of its time.
The J3+ looks nice, but it is pricey. I am trying hard to see where the J3+ would fit.
But, I am just saying, this is just me, etc.

"...such expensive lens"

I understand that its expensive relative to the used options out there, but the price doesn't seem all that out there for a newly made lens. Its $100 cheaper than a new VM 50/1.5 and almost have the cost of the Zeiss 50/1.5.

We've mentioned that several times already and Nikos' faster cheaper lenses aren't even 50mm lenses..

;)

I bought one today, should ship tomorrow.

In Canada it's CDN $719 free shipping, which works out to be US $500 at the current exchange rate.
I think that's a great deal, can't wait to play around with it!

I find it worrying that all we know is the focal length and aperture. Nothing else, we can't even agree on the price. Oh yes, and it's new.

As I said, I find it worrying...

I think we know everything there is to know about it.

The only thing I can't figure out is the subjective. Like how people looking at a few fence post shots can decide there are other "...even faster, even cheaper lenses that outperform it for less." I don't see a side to side comparison of the exact same subject. So I don't have that ability. The previous member that has the other article also doesn't really compare, shot to shot. Instead, he just uses his trained eye and memory, and pronounces it "the best Sonnar ever."

To me, the lens shots look like what they are, very sharp, very short focal length, with signature Sonnar bokeh and colors. In a new, all metal mount, from a modern optical company that made them years ago. Without side by side comparisons, it's all subjective.
