Hey there,
I'm recently interested in acquire one of the Sonnar designed lenses. Just came across a couple ones:
=> fit Contax RF?
- CZJ (Carl Zeiss Jena) Sonnar 5cm/1.5
knowing there're pre-/post-war and coated/un-coated versions
- CZO (Carl Zeiss-Opton) Sonnar 5cm/1.5
- CZ 50/1.5
=> Leica & its copies
- Canon 50 1.5 LTM (should be also a Sonnar design)
- Leica Summarit 5cm/1.5 (un-coated?)
heard a lot of them were with scratches on elements which might increase possibility of flares?
=> Others
- Promiment-converted LTM Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.5
hard to find, not sure if it's a Sonnar design or not but definitely one of the best for B&W
I know Brian and some other senior members on RFF has done some comparison before, but my questions here are:
- Which one do you own/have you tried?
- Which one is your favorite? Why?
And then there're some modern ones, ie. Carl Zeiss C Sonnar T * 1.5/50 ZM, I also found there's a limited edition of Carl Zeiss Sonnar T * 1.5/50 for the Nikon S mount.
I'm also curious about the difference between the ZM edition and the S mount limited edition.
- Is there any difference between two of them? I can't seem to find a sample taken by the limited edition.
- The lens body built of the S-mount edition is definitely much more solid and well-built. Just wonder if optically is there any difference? Or is it simply a clone of the old Carl Zeiss Sonnar 5cm/1.5 but with some enhancements?
Thanks for reading this and would appreciate if I have some of your inputs here.

wow, thanks a lot, Ari. That is helpful.
Moreover, I'm still interested to know any of your experience with the lens I've listed above...and the last question regarding the difference between the modern sonnar and the limited edition.

I don't think that the the 5cm f/1.5 Summarit is a Sonnar design, but a double Gauss design.
