i know that this lens locks in the open or 'take photo' position but is it supposed to lock when it is in the closed or 'in the camera' position also?

Joe,

Got your PM I'm glad you have a system for using the Canon III I sent you. With the Wide lens and viewfinder it sounds like an ideal system.

I checked my 50 1.9 and it locks in the open and closed position. If I understand you correctly that is what you were asking. If yours doesn't it might be a different type, I don't know if there was any variance between the Canon lenses.

Anyway glad you are enjoying the III.

hey leo,

yes that was the question. i wonder if there were lenses made to work a bit differently from each other.
it seemed to me that the lens 'should' lock both ways.
no real consequence as the lens doesn't slide open or anything.

yeah, the external finder with the 28 and greater dof alleviates the need for focusing, making the dimmer vf a moot point.

The lens barrel is not free to turn when in the collapsed position, but it does not lock in the same sense that it does in the extended positon. It is still free to move in and out with no resistance. In the extended position it is rotated into a set of bayonets that lock it so it will not retract.

If the felt in the lens focusing mount is in good condition you should not have a problem with the lens barrel moving loosely in and out while handling with the lens retracted.

that pretty much covers it paul.

it does not turn in the collapsed position and it is free to move/be pulled out.
it does not move loosely in & out.

all in all i think this lens is in very nice shape.
if it is close in performance to the 50/1.8 i will be extremely pleased.
i love it on the iv sb.

good memory victor.

i was supposed to, but when leo was about to wrap the camera and lens he took a better look at the lens and discovered some haze/fungus(?) in it. a tiny bit.
he gave me the option of either backing out of the whole deal or just taking the body or taking it all and seeing what i thought about the lens.
as i had one already i just took the body.
leo is still using the lens as the ? has no impact on the images.

i must say leo is one good guy to deal with. very up front and was anxious to make sure i was happy with whatever we decided to do.
i'd deal with him again, easy.
