50 Elmar for scale focusing......

Frank S, if ever you understand the question, do please tell me about it. But not if it's about focussing a collapsible lens when collapsed. I know the answer to that one.

I scale focused successfully with my Fed-50 collapsible, and that's an Elmar clone.

Payasam, I love your signature 😀

Oh, okay. Sure it works, that's why the scale is there. It's collapsibility plays no role (as long as it's extended when you take the picture.) 🙂

how do you mean extended?

My two collapsible lenses are the same length as my rigid lenses if that's what you mean

He was surmising that because you have to pull the front part out and lock it there might be an issue with successful scale focusing; that maybe some interaction with the extension might screw it up. As Frank says its a good idea to extend the lens first...

I think someone here once posted a photo taken with an non-extended Elmar - it wasn't bad! 🙂

It is no problem to set the focus on the Elmar 50, but it's a headache to make out the DOF since the aperture marks are so close together. The DOF scale is important in scale focussing since it is difficult to guess the exact subject distance, but it may be easy to guess a distance which puts the subject within the DOF. With a 50mm lens, I usually find it more convenient to use the rangefinder except when I use hyperfocal distance (which assures maximum DOF for a given aperture).

Steve, lenses of the same focal length, whether collapsible or rigid, will behave in the same way with any given film format and for the same circle of confusion. Maybe lenses exist with distance scales marked inaccurately, but I have yet to see one or hear of one. The same goes for depth of field markings. What it boils down to is two things: careful handling to avoid accidents (Roland) and possible difficulty seeing what you want on the scales (Richard).

Thanks, Ash: it is sweet stuff.

Actually they( Dof markings) are quite often on the optimistic side, so better to stop down an extra stop... Worst is the original 35/2.8 Biogon for Contax, 1/½ stop off!:bang:

Come on guys, it doesn't work ... you know they put a scale only for fun, sometimes it's a red coloured scale, we call lens like that "the clown" ... funny indeed 😛
Of course, it works Steve!
Marc

PS: sorry for the silly message .... it turns out I'm silly today 😱
