who is using 500px to host their photos?
what can you tell us about the service?
is it worth switching from another host?
 
I've had an account for a while now, but don't really use it to its full potential. Seems more photog oriented than Flickr and some of the other mainstream ones. Nicer mobile apps too.
 
I know one successful photog on this site. He is local and knew Toronto people who made this site.
He told me if you want to be successful where, make sure your pictures are heavily edited.
I used it and find it to be rudimental, not worth of switching. Only if you like to look at the pictures of naked skinny Russian models. I don't, but even after I put filter on, it was way too many for my taste.
Flickr is superior to 500px by all things I need.

I looked at it last year when Flickr was going through its user interface revolution, and decided it wasn't that interesting.

Recently, I've been using Facebook to share photos, and notice that some of my Flickr contacts are doing likewise. FB has its drawbacks, but there are photo groups there which are pretty active (e.g. groups for Leica, film cameras, Rollei, Olympus XA -- in other words, the cameras I usually shoot with).
 
I use it for most of my photo hosting. For me it's a nice place to manage a portfolio. I don't particularly care about the affection or hits, and never use their other functions.

If you want to make your images popular you need to do a lot of socializing or do heavy post processing. But as a general portfolio site I think it's cleaner and easier to use than flickr.
 
I thought I'd revive Joe's thread and see if there's been any more experience with 500px. Anyone using it? If so, thoughts?

I switched from Squarespace to Wordpress.org to reduce cost, but between domain, hosting, and my template fee, I'm back up to the original cost. As I plan for retirement, I'm in cost-cutting mode. (I'm not much of a Flickr fan.)

Appreciate any additional user insights on 500px. Thanks.

I don't really like the interface for Flickr. I have a 500px page and find the process of uploading and organizing pretty easy to use. It deosn't really have anything to do with heavy editing, its more about how to tag your photo. Basically the key to "success" "likes" in all social media now.

Thanks, Chris. I'm OK with the Flickr user interface, but don't like the way it presents photos to visitors. I like the 500px look. I'm less interested in community than in a cheap, attractive way to show galleries.

I'm on 500px. Definitely more "fantasy" style work than Flickr but its easy to deal with like Fenixv8 said. I wish there was an alternative. I mostly use it so I can screen shot to Instagram. I'm gonna start printing again in Jan and try to display my work locally instead. This is just a hobby for me though.
 
I also use 500px but not very actively. I've reserved it for MF film work, to differentiate from Flickr which is my primary dumping ground. As others have said, it's easy to upload and tag things. It's moved in recent years to trying more of a marketplace (purchase or license photos). I don't know how you would get traction though.

I'm not too happy with the limitation on the personal site side. I'm also not crazy about the Marketplace requirements as they require model/property releases for everything. Good legal protection, but a photo of a bike that I saw on the street in France - I'm not likely to ever have a property release for that!

I see. A big difference and both very nice. On the public page I like the gallery look. That would work well for me. Not crazy about the details column on single images.

What service level is required for your web site? is that "Awesome"? Thanks.

BTW, I like your "Mars" gallery. We fly Chicago to Phoenix and Tucson regularly, so that looks familiar.

Last night I put 20 pics on 500px, just to see what it's like. This morning I have 2300 views, 400 likes, and a bunch of comments. Several photos were moved to the "Popular" and "Upcoming" categories -- whatever that means. So maybe it's a good platform if you value social media traffic. Which is not important to me.

Also, judging from what's shown by the explore function, it does not seem to be much of a destination for street photography.

John - yep, I'm awesome :)
The Awesome level gives you the portfolio and option to have a custom domain. I already had the domain so ported it over to the 500px account. That was a relatively simple process. And for the money, it's a pretty good value.
 
I like the presentation, your pictures will look their best on it. I don't use any of their services beyond my portfolio so I can't comment there. I'll agree that in the "all categories" mode there is a disportionate amount of nude shots but one must suffer I suppose.
 
I agree it presents nicely, but the focus on likes and popularity doesn't appeal to me at all. I suppose one could ignore all that, but it's so integral to the platform, at least with the public options. "Like" buttons should be made illegal.
