50mm ASPH Summilux Problem

The problem I saw from the frame posted looks to me like a processing error. 120 and 35mm in the same tank can cause streaking, since the reels are different, and the spaces between the film are not uniform. The chemistry will not move evenly, and you get streaks like this. I'd bet there's nothing wrong with your lens.

My appology but I was talking about two seperate problems in the same thread.

The lens problem shows aa the RF not aligning at infinity. I tried it on three bodies and the same on each. Other lenses were fine and aligned perfectly at infinity. The asph wasn't just a little of it was by quite a bit. Others have stated they have the same problem.

The streaks absolutely aren't processing marks. I've run and mixed formats in a single tank for 49 years and never had a problem. The problem repeated itself in a big way this weekend and even appeared in unexposed frames. There's no question but what it is a shutter problem.


Yes I'm thinking about selling the asph summilux but will wait and see how I feel when it comes back. I'm shooting under increasingly low light and this weekend shot some with the Nokton 35 at 1.2 @ 1/8 on 1600 Fuji Neopan handheld and got very good results. The old nerves are still good. That's what being an old wine drinker does. I've been entertaining selling the summilux and getting a noctilux but not certain due to the focus shift everyone says exists. I think part of it is I'm really ticked at Leicas poor quality now and if there was an equivalent in another brand would dump the summilux in a heart beat. The Zeiss Sonnar has its problems but I do like the CV Nokton 50 that I had and never had a single complaint. Matter of fact I love my 35 Nokton and 28 ultron and have used them extensively with fantastic results. Say what you want but these lenses deliver the when you need them. I couldn't be happier than I am with my Zeiss lenses but am concerned about focus shift in the sonnar.

It's been thirty two years since shooting the new noctilux and before that I had the original 1.2 50. the 1.2 was good wide open and to f 4 but below that was only fair. I don't remember any focus shift with the f1 but it's been some time. If you have comments please let me know how you personally like your noctilux not what you have read from someone else.

I guess you are right, but the point it I want something which is not so sharp and not so corrected, I want something that has retro look, why is sonnar a disappointment? we are stealing x-ray`s topic here, btw where can I see x-ray`s 90mm photos!? 🙂

You should try a 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH ... 😉
 
I had a banding issue with 10x8 film and ruled out quite clearly every theory put fwd. Never got to the bottom of that and find it hard to see how the lens could be at fault. Weird!

I wasn't suggesting the lens was at fault but addressing two problems in a single thread.

The lens has mechanical problems preventing iit from focusing to infinity properly.

The body has a shutter problem with it not capping all the way on the last frame causing bands where the film stops during rewind.

DAG has the lens since it was out of warranty and leica has the MP body since it is in warranty.

I know things can happen with anything but the problems with my newer genreation Leica gear is getting out of hand. It shows a poor standard for quality now compared to past generations and also compared to my Camon and Nikon equipment.

Roger that. My banding was vertical thru one sheet, horizontal thru another, printed on various papers and was therefore on the neg tho you could not see it unless printed. Head was tested and fine (and in any case was not consistent with orientation). Deduced it must have been a film fault with the issue only showing on areas of constant smooth high tones and even then just visible rather than obvious. Sure annoyed me tho!

Good luck getting the other kit fixed.
