50mm - Collapsable Summicron vs. Elmar-M (Silver)?

Is that your phone number?

To me Elmar-M is the thingy without focus tab, fewer aperture blades and with Elmar-M on the front.

Just goggle it. Ken R will help right away :)

Cheers, Ko.

A simple landscape, that resonates for me..
Well done Eric.

My Collapsible Summicron is sharp from f4.
Mine is pristine.
It has a beautiful rendition for portraits, usually shot at about 5'.
Not really soft, but a sort of halo around subject, varies with light.
Sure low contrast, which is easily boosted whereas "high" contrast lenses,
at many times a problem, in strong light and deep shadows.
The joy of carrying an M under a jacket, a real bonus.

I have used the Elmar f2.8 and it's a great lens.
Very sharp, great contrast and also collapsible on my M's.

I prefer the use of the f2.
Oh! In certain light and aperture, one gets "donut" shape out of focus bokeh!
I saw it in some of HCB and other Magnum shooters.

The possibility of a "pristine" model the difficulty!
In that case, get the Elmar.
As a Canadian Leica Technician said to a friend,
"The Summicron! One more f-stop!"
Whatever enjoy

I like the collapsible 'cron, with the extra speed.

Somewhat suprised that no one has yet mentioned the f2 version of the Heliar, has the speed of the cron, but none of the 50-year-old haze.

I have the Summicron 50/2 collapsible, not Thorium

I have the Summicron 50/2 collapsible, not Thorium

I have the collapsible with no marks, no dust, and it is pristine (after I had it cleaned up from haze b Youxin). The lens is sharp wide open. I used it mostly on digital M8/M9. but I am going to start using it on M3, M2, M5. I also have a DR and Rigid 50/2. I want to buy the Elmar 50/2.8 old version.

If this thread continues, Elmar-M 50 f2.8 is a specific designation for the modern 1990s lens, not the 1950s Elmar 50 2.8 in M mount.

nobody answered my question. Is that normal that the focus moves when the aperture ring is moved?

1950 Summicron -aperture does not move with focus.

The only lens that does is the first 50 2.8 from 1955. I prefer it to the Summicron coll. The images are much like Rigid/DR Summicron.

Thank you, Leicapixie for this compliment!

I love both lenses, my Summicron Collapsible is a screwmount and is optically pristine. It is a great lens for the M5 because it can be collapsed, the Elmar-M can not.
Due to it's multicoating and only four elements the Elmar-M has a more modern look. The Summicron Collapsible has however a very special rendering of it's own.
