50mm for kiev camera

No experience with Jupiter-3. Helios-103 is a nice sharp lens, although mine is prone to flare in daylight: a hood is a must. I have a shot or two taken with the Helios in my gallery.

I'm not as fond of the Helios-103 as some. It's almost too sharp and, as mentioned, flares easily. I have a Sonnar 50/2 and it's nice but really there is no difference between the Sonnar and Jupiter optically.

If you have money to spare and want a very different look and feel from the Sonnar/Jupiter, look for the old Zeiss Tessar 50/3.5 or 50/2.8. Look in the gallery for examples (Honu-Hugger and Furcafe, I believe, have and use these lenses. I wish I did 🙁 )

It seems that the flare in H-103 is laregely conditioned by poor darkening of the aperture blades and the innards of the lens barrel. Now that I've got this nice (and *thin*) black paint perhaps am gonna try doing a better job.

As for it being too sharp, I've yet to see a lens too sharp wide open, and I using wider apertures a lot.

I tried different combo with my Kiev and here are my conclusions :
I got excellents results with slides with both Jupiter 8 and Helios, with extreme sharpness on the two lenses, but I must say that I always use a Coated Zeiss UV filter and a hood.
The helios is much more prone to flare but my aperture blades are silver-colored !
Same thing for color prints.
Never tried my J-3s with color films. 1964 sample is good but flares, bad internal paint. 1952 sample is my preferate, it is perfect, that's all ! I wish I can have one day a real F/1.5 Sonnar to compare !😉
