50mm rear element - how do you protect it?

I'm new to the Nikon RF world and have been using M Leicas for many years. With the Leica there's no problem with a back lens cap for any lens but I don't know what to do to protect the back element of my 50 1.4 nikkor when it's not on the camera. I'm thinking about fabricating a cap from a plastic film can with a learher band glued inside to take up the extra space on the sides. Any suggestion? I haven't seen a back cap for the fifty but that isn't to say they don't exist.

I've been using the rear caps from J-8's and Helios-103's for mine. they work. I used to keep lens paper in the lens cases for them.

I use a weird plastic lid thingy I found at a flea market for something like a nickel. Also, if you cut down an orange plastic prescription medicine bottle (common in the United States), the size is very close to perfect.

Nikon made rear caps for their 50's (inner bayonet). They are not that common and rather pricey, but turn up on eBay from time to time.

Actually Ed I found a couple on E bay and yes they were <$20.00. They fit rather loose but do manage to stay on. One was a NK and one generic...maybe for Contax..they all fit the same. I didn't feel comfortable leaving the lens in my bag with only a plastic sandwich bag as protection. I found rear caps for the 35mm F1.8 and Biogon at Cameraquest..they ae $22 each if I remember correctly. Both of these rear cap styles are really worthwhile getting in order to protect your investment...a must have IMO.

To get the 50mm rear caps to fit better, use a small screwdriver and slightly pull up on the three lugs at the back of the lens.
