film processing and scanning

film processing and scanning

Nice shots Chris, i really like Pan F shots more than TAMX.
What is NCPS scan?

The two places I send film to be processes and scanned are North Coast Photo Supply (NCPS) and Precision Camera & Video (PCV).

Both do a great job and PCV is a sponsor of this web site.

Currently I send all of my C-41 & E-6 to PCV and the black & white to NCPS. C-41 & E-6 processing is very standardized and I can't tell the difference from PCV or NCPS, both are great.

The results with black and white vary more from lab to lab and depend on the chemicals they use. NCPS is a known quantity to me and so far I have stuck with them for black and white. I have not tried the black and white processing at PCV.

The other black and white lab I use is DR5. They do reversal processing on black and white and make slides. I send my black & white 3D slides to them. My favorite films for b&W slides are Rollei IR shot at ISO200, and Ilford HP5+ shot anywhere from 400-1600.

The 6x9 advantage

The 6x9 advantage

Red filter only for dramatic skies, orange here works better ............. terrific scans, indeed what is a NCPS scan?

Part of the reason the scans look so much better than any 35mm scan is the size of the negative, not to mention the great lenses on the Fujis. A 6x9 frame has 5½ times the area of a 35mm frame, thus there is more room to record detail.

That is why even the best Leica lens on 35mm can't hold a candle to the detail in a 6x9.

Part of the reason I choose Fuji 6X9s is that is the 6x9 frame is largest size that can be easily scanned by NCPS or PCV. There is no substitution for more recording area. More film area is why many people still use view cameras. I am just to busy with other aspect of my life to do so now.

From a recent holiday. A folder is a wonderful travelling camera! Been back a week, need to get cracking on the rest of the developing backlog!
