Hi All,I'm thinking about going for a black 85mm f2 and finder for my black CV Bessa-R. Another option would be the 85mm 1.9/2 Canon lenses. What do you guys think? Anybody using the J9 on the Bessa-R?Thanks!-Dan

I use it on my Bessa L but only stopped down or with external RF. It works fine, a very nice lens (you just have to get the "right" one)

I use one on my R2a - but I find the baselength a little too short for anything requiring fine focussing. It's fine on the iiia though.

I've got a nice J-9 that I've used a little on my Bessa-R and it was just fine - I haven't tried it wide open at short distances though, so I can't be sure of the focusing accuracy. (And I don't use it on the Bessa any more, because I have a CV 75/2.5 now)

BTW I do have a CV75, which is a cool lens. But I -want- Sonnar bokeh😛 and the extra reach, and half-stop.
Been reading on the Kiev Survuval Site, how to take this thing apart. Looks not too bad.........:bang:

Jupiter-9 is usable w/o adjustment of lens to camera on stops behind f/4, to use it on f2-2.8 - adjustment of lens to camera body required.
BTW the best versions of J-9 are white from 60s.

forget the kiev survival site, the LTM version is different and much harder to re-assamble.

I have a '59 vintage J-9 that worked just fine on my Bessa R. Including close up and wide open. It was the second one I tried. And I just used the 90mm frame lines rather than an external finder for it. I think a well working example is a wonderful lens.
I wouldn't "forget" the Kiev Survival Site--there is a lot of good info there--but the Kiev versions and LTM versions are not quite the same so what's there doesn't apply to the lens you get for the Bessa R.

I use a J-9 on my R3A, and even wide open and close up it gives good results. It is better stopped down though.
For my own uses, this is just fine, as I don't use it that often.

OK went to www.fedka.com and picked up a new Russian 85mm finder for $25. So I'm -set-.

Russian VI85 - complete dull and scary suckz. It does not cost $25. This junk is sold around 100 rubles ($3)
VI35 is so-so, but usable.
BTW, I heard that on R3s both J-9 and J-3 works very fine wide open, 1:1 viewfinder is very good thing.

That's not a hard and fast rule though. I have a white 60s one that flares badly, and a black 80s one that is excellent.

You are right. LZOS who made and makes J-9 in black appearance sometimes does good quality. Reverse thing is true for KMZ lens. But I will rather prefer white versions of russian optics. Not even from 60s but from 50s.

First, why would you want to use external VF for 85 on Bessa R ? The 90 framelines are fine...
I have a black J-9 made by LZOS and it's a pretty good lens. A bit soft at f/2 but plenty sharp at f/4 and beyond.

The best advice is to use the lens as if it was a 85/4 - don't use it wide open. This way you overcome the FSU vs. Leica problem as well as Bessa's insufficient RF baselength.
PS: The J-9 is a copy of Zeiss Sonnar lens, as well as the Canon 🙂

I also have a Voigtlander Bessa-T, which does not have a viewfinder.
I'm hoping to be able to sometimes use the lens wide-open. Maybe with the Bessa-T, which works better with hard to focus lenses.....
