85mm - M Mount

I own the lens. Will take some test shots and post them here.

I have seen it priced at around $1,800 USD but I can't find anyone int he states who has one on hand. I did see one advertised at a store here in Vienna for about that price. I haven't seen any images from it but am very curious. Compared to the other Zeiss glass it seems to be pricey....

There is a Rollei 80 (which is actually an 83 if I remember correctly), it can be a much less expensive option with the modern coatings if you can come across one.

The ZM 85 is made in Germany, floating elements requiring more precise manufacturing is what Zeiss says.

It looks much more compact than I imagined- Michael is there much VF frameline intrusion?

It looks like it's about the same size as the Contax-mount Zeiss Sonnar 85mm f/2; it's a beautiful lens; the main drawback, in my view, is the 1.5m closest focusing distance. I hope that the new ZM 85mm Sonnar close-focuses to at least 1m

Truly, if they kept, or better yet, improved the image rendition with this new lens, had a "closer" min. focusing distance, I'd sell my 90mm Summicron and go with this one.

Although I haven't tested the aspherical APO 90 Summicron. It'd be nice to see/read a comparison of both. Not Puts' comparison, though; his reviews are definitely not my cup of tea.

I've recently gotten the APO 90/2 ASPH, and the first two rolls have really knocked my socks off. Fantastic way out into the corners and even down to 11 there is a snap and sparkle to the negs. Shot some more with it today, trying to make use of all that depth of field, that is where the learning curve is for me and the 90, getting used to the lack of depth of field.

No, only a little bit, but ok for me. But I have not yet the lens shade. This attached to the lens might be more a problem. The lens shade was not available, when I bought the lens.

On the picture the lens looks indeed compact. But compared with the 35mm it is huge. Perhaps I will make some shots with my digital P&S camera today, showing the 85 and the 35 or the 50. From the M-mount the diameter increases to approx. 6.5cm and decreases then to 5.8cm at the front element of the lens.

Popflash doesn't have the 85/2 yet but does display a price of $2774!

Huge and heavy and expensive. But the MTF at f4 is hard to believe.
They don't tell us about f8. An 85 at f4 has a very shallow DOF. Uhm I hate to see a one eye sharp and the other out of focus. It is dreadful to me. I guess the bokeh lovers will instead be interested.
I have the CY 85 2,8 and it performs quite well. But this one is an entirely different design.
