A long time ago, I used a rare collectible daily: a Leica AUFSU finder. Horribly expensive, and from the perspective of modern optics it was a joke. But it die the job and helped me with street photography.

Do you know of any modern alternatives?

Sure there are many modern versions available now

I just stumbled upon this great site this week

I was given one of these last Christmas: Sight Optical Waist Level Viewfinder For Camera - CHI

To be honest, I've not used it much so far, but it's decent for what it is. I have the 28/35/50 version, and I definitely recommend using the optional hood that comes with it - not only does it help keep the viewfinder glass clean, but it does help with the view in certain situations. The hood is quite well built, too; you need to fold it down manually like the hood on a Lubitel (luckily, I've got pretty dextrous fingers), but there's a magnet in it to keep it closed, and the spring to pop it up is decently powerful.

The only negative I will say is that to make the viewfinder actually worth using, they've also made it bloody massive. With the hood fitted but collapsed, it's 39mm tall from the base of the accessory shoe and 37.1mm wide at the widest point. This means it blocks the second accessory shoe on my Leica Ic, regardless of the position I mount the viewfinder's foot in.

Considering I usually use this camera with the old Voigtlander 28/35 mini-finder or a low-profile 28mm Zeiss finder for the Contax II, this feels massive!
