I just bought a Screwmount 90mm F4, chrome Elmar. It has no lenscap. Does anyone know what filter size it takes or thread size it has? Thanks in advance.

Most likely it is A36 which is a push on lenscap, measure the OD of the front of the lens and it should be 36mm. Not sure about the thread pitch, could be different than most filters made today.

The 36A is a press on I have been told. However, I was interested in the thread, which I have heard are either 34mm or 34.5mm. Does anyone know what the exact threads are? If it is a 34mm, I can get a 34-37 step up. I already have a 37 to 49 step up. If a 34mm step up can screw into the lens, I will be able to use my filters and shades from 49mm. Is this the same thread size as the Summar as well?

Hello, Anthony: Since your 90mm Elmar is chrome, and you don't specify which model you have, the filter size could be A36, a slip-on filter, or alternatively a 34mm screw-in filter. Or, if the lens is later, it could require E39 filters.

Best,
David

I use a 34-37 step-up and then a small hood. Great portrait lense. I wish I had opportunity to use mine more. Anyone need one of these?

They often turn up on eBay usually at reasonable prices. Just make sure you do not buy the larger one for later lenses (42mm outside diameter.)

Elmar 90mm filter size

Hi Anthony: Going by the serial number you give for your lens, according to the Hove 7th edition Leica Pocket book, it dates from 1949. According to the same reference, the E39 filter size on the 90mm Elmar was introduced in 1951. The Summar 50mm lens also uses a 34mm screw-in filter or an A36 slip-on. I bought my 34mm UVa
filter from Schneider Optics, the distributors for B&W filters, but they're quite widely available.

Best,
David

Thanks David, I will get the 34 to 37 step up ring. I have a 37 to 49 with a lot of filters and hoods that fit my OM1.

Yes, 50/2 Summar, 90/4 Elmar, and 135/4.5 Hektor all have 34mm filter threads. There was a full line of Leica filters you could screw into these. They're a lot less common than the A36 clamp-on filters.

I bought the 34mm to 37mm step up ring. It did not fit. It is a hair too big and does not screw in. It goes in just a tad and stops. I think the filter size is 34.5mm.

The screw-in filters for the 90mm Elmar are 34mm (except the very late versions; they are 39mm screw-in). Canon filters are a perfect fit, although a little hard to find.

Mine is a 34mm which is readily available now as the 34mm filters are used on some digital cameras. A better suggestion would be the SOOGZ adapter which will enable you to use everything e39. Stu
